Welcome to Year 2

Welcome back! We hope you had a great summer and the children are ready to start their journey in year 2!

In these newsletters throughout the year you will find out about the many different things that your children will be learning about. The autumn term is always a busy time with lots to look forward to!

Year 2 has three classes - Gorillas with Mrs Bramwell and Miss Joyce, Giraffes with Mrs Zastron and Zebras with Miss Guntrip. Mr Summers, Mrs Savage, Miss Bloxham, Mrs Bruce and Mrs Rozzier will be the additional adults supporting the children across all three classes. We are more than happy to answer any questions so please do not hesitate to talk to one of us.

Big picture

Our new topic

Our topic for the term is Fire and Ice. Here is a summary of what the children will be learning across the curriculum.

English

This academic year we are introducing a new approach to the teaching of English that focuses on language development, grammar and techniques that the children use to develop their writing style. Our first key text of the term is Not Your Typical Dragon (Dan Bar-El) and from this the children will retell the narrative, create instructions on how to look after a pet dragon and write a book review. The children will also have daily SPAG sessions (spelling, punctuation & grammar), daily 'Book Talk' sessions, handwriting and a weekly visit to the school's library.

Mathematics

We will focus on number, place value, addition and subtraction initially in year two. The children will be taught about patterns in number and making connections so that their quick recall of mental maths improves. We will explore number problems and developing their understanding and use of mathematical language to explain how they have answered a question.

Topic

Our topic lessons will be themed around Fire & Ice. We will be learning about living things and their habitats and conducting experiments involving materials. We will be learning all about the Great Fire of London and in computing, the children will learn and use their knowledge of algorithms to create their own computer game!

Spellings will be sent home every Friday and tested the following Thursday.

How can you help?

Mental Math Minutes! Can you give your child maths calculations to solve and see how many they can do in a minute? Record the total and try to beat the score!

Visit a local library and find books about your child's hobbies and things that interest them. Can you find a story book and an information book and compare them? Can you think of an alternative ending for the story?

Practice the spellings sent home.
