Ms. Bailey & Mrs. Shumpert's Class: Week of Oct. 19th

Dear Families,

Report cards will be coming home on Oct. 26th. Our grading system consists of the numbers 1,2,3, and 4 for each indicator. The numbers represent your child's understanding/ progress. The grades are as follows: 1=beginning 2=developing 3=meeting and 4= exceeds grade level expectations. Please understand that each grade consists of several indicators that determine the overall number score for the Power Standards you will see.
Kindergarten teachers worked together this 9 weeks to determine the overall score for many of our indicators. You may see several 2s on this report card. Please do not let this cause stress or concern. We simply need time to "develop" many of these important beginning of the year concepts.

Please click the link below if you would like to schedule a conference to discuss your child's progress.

If you are not receiving the Ebinport School Newsletter from Mrs. Rutledge, please let me know. She has lots of school-wide information and reminders for the week.
Have a great week and as always, if you have questions or concerns you can reach me by phone at 981-1550 or, or send a note in the binder.

Dates, Reminders, and Information

  • Fund Raiser Collection Day:
October 29th--last day for fundraiser collection
  • October 30th--Run-a-thon Day (Our Run time is 8:40-9:00am)

**Please send in the initialed, completed Homework Calendars at the end of the month for your child to receive a special treat.

  • Guided Reading Books and Binders:
Now that Guided Reading books are coming home, it is EXTREMELY important that your child brings his or her binder (notebook) back to school DAILY with any books we send home. We share these books with the whole school, so even though your child may keep the book for more than one day, we still have to keep track of the books. Please help your child get into a routine of being responsible by placing books and binders in backpacks each night.

  • Transportation Changes:
If your child needs to go home a different way, we must have it in writing. Thanks for helping us keep your child safe.

Please see the link below to find out about a program offered by SunnyD to help us get books for our classroom. If we collect 20 labels, we can earn 20 free books for our class. Thanks so much for helping our classroom library grow.

Kid's Korner

Last week was filled with lots of learning fun. We wrapped up our unit on the 5 Senses, and used our taste buds to identify sweet, salty, sour, and bitter tastes. We popped popcorn in an electric popper to use all five senses. We loved it when the kernels made the popcorn fly into the air. We learned about ordinal numbers and wore masks as we pretended to be animals on the way for a veterinarian check up. We practiced making patterns with fall leaves, and created a map to help us learn about our town and neighborhoods. We also learned about fire safety by discussing smoke detectors, safety plans, and how STOP, DROP, and ROLL, and to call 911 if there is an emergency and grown-ups need help.
If you have not already done so, please make a safety plan with your family in the event of a house fire or emergency. We learned about having a meeting place that is safe and away from the house, such as by a mailbox or curb. These simple plans will help keep you and your family safe, so please take time to make a plan. Also, please check the batteries in all smoke detectors and practice STOP, DROP, and ROLL.
Check out these pictures below to see how we make learning FUN!

A Peek at the Week

**Some skills are repeated from week to week as they require additional time to learn and practice.

Counting objects from 1-20, understanding that the arrangement of the objects doesn't change the number, shapes (2D/3D), ordinal numbers, story problems with Halloween themes.
Writing Workshop-
As we continue to write books we are working on making our words go from left to right, and spacing between words. We will also start to locate the keys on an electronic device (iPad,computer, keyboard). We will also learn when to use upper-case letters, (beginning of sentences and for the first letter in our names).
We will also work on staying on one topic throughout our whole book.
Reading Workshop- We are reviewing letters and letter sounds. If your child knows all letters in random order, practice letter sounds. Use the ABC chart in his/her binder to help. A,a, apple, B,b ball, etc.
Social Studies- Maps--We will focus on our city and places we go in our neighborhoods. Help your child learn his/her address and phone number

Name Writing- Please help your child practice writing his/her first name using the proper letter formation and only capitalize the first letter. See examples of letter formations in your child's binder if you need assistance.

Counting- Please help your child by putting items in a line and practice counting, saying the number name, and touching each object as he/she counts aloud.
