STAFF IN THE SPOTLIGHT
MEET MS. YIN CHAN-VO
Hello HSE Family! I have been a teacher for 15 years and with Harmony for 13 of those years. I have taught 2nd and 3rd grade. I currently teach 3rd-grade Math and Science. I am a proud parent and teacher of Harmony since 2007! I have 3 children, two girls and one boy who have attended a Harmony school since Kindergarten. With the quality education that our Harmony teachers provide, I feel that my children are well-prepared for their future. My older daughters who are in college and high school have fond memories of HSE and the staff members here. They continue to keep in touch and stay connected with their peers and favorite teachers even to this day. One thing I love about Harmony, and being on the same campus for so many years, is that I get to see the students I’ve taught grow up and graduate. It fills me with so much joy when students return and remember me, or share with me how my teaching made a difference in their life or how they understand math better because of the strategies I’ve taught them.
I received my Masters Degree in Elem Ed from the University of Florida in August of 2001.
I am a mentor to our wonderful mentees.
When I am not teaching, I enjoy spending time with my family and fur babies. I enjoy nature walks, traveling, going to the beach, and trying out new food. I am a huge foodie. I enjoy trying authentic food from different countries. So looking forward to I-Fest for this reason!

Hi HSE Family!!! I hope everyone is well!! November is in full swing and it already promises to be a busy month. I want to start by saying THANK YOU for all of the birthday wishes, I truly enjoyed celebrating with the kiddos on Friday as they dropped by my office for a treat. I am also super excited that the Astro's took home the big win on my actual birthday, it was such an amazing way to end an already fantastic day.
Now, let's transition and get into some counseling talk!!! This semester, I have been receiving an increasing amount of SAF's for students (referrals) from teachers, staff, and parents describing various social emotional concerns and needs. I am so grateful to be here at HSE as the counselor and pour into my students daily, however, being the only counselor to 800+ students, I simply can't do it alone. Parents, this is where you come in! Understanding SEL (social emotional learning) and implementing it at home is essential for helping your child develop the emotional intelligence they need to navigate life. Some of you may be thinking... How do I do that? I don't have the time or skill set. It seems complicated. That's what counselors and teachers are for. Etc.
I have news for you, YOU CAN DO IT and it's not as hard as you may think. All it takes is effort and consistency on your part to help your child develop socially and emotionally. You would be surprised at how many kiddos come into my office and tell me they don't feel like they can talk to their parents/guardians at home because they don't feel like they're allowed the space to do so. I am going to share a few tips that will help you connect with your child and implement SEL at home.
How to Develop the Emotional Quotient of Your Child:
1. Understanding the meaning of Emotional Intelligence
- Emotional intelligence refers to the capacity to recognize and manage our own feelings and to respond effectively to those of others. Research has suggested that children with high emotional intelligence are happier, have better ability to maintain friendships and achieve future success.
2. Increase Emotional Awareness
- Label and reflect feelings: Some children are less articulate in verbalizing their feelings.
- Acknowledge and accept feelings: Parents need to be patient and listen attentively with empathy when your child is experiencing a difficult moment.
- Schedule “special time” with your child: During which, parents can talk about feelings and thoughts, or build up your child’s emotional vocabularies.
3. Model Emotional Management Skills
- Parents’ self-care: Parent’s psychological health is crucial to a child’s emotional wellbeing. Scheduling a break for self-reflection from time to time is important.
- Parent's may also consider seeking counseling services for themselves to help manage their own mental and emotional health. When parents are mentally and emotionally healthy, it helps them connect with their child and focus on developing effective coping skills.
- Parents may also explore with their child creative and fun ideas of stress relieving activities such as jogging, sports, drawing and playing musical instruments.
4. Enhance Problem Solving Skills
- Problem solving skills enable your child to deal with his/her stressors effectively in daily life. Help your child identify the problem/trigger of negative emotions.
- Parents may gradually offer your child more opportunities to solve problems independently depending on his/her age, developmental stage and maturity. This can enhance your child’s self-confidence.
I hope these tips were helpful!! If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me.
30 DAys of Thankfulness
Our Counselor, Ms. Dewalt, decorated her Bulletin Board with the 30 Days of Thankfulness theme in which our staff members and students were invited to write what they are thankful for.
Here's from Ms. DeWalt.....
While everyday that we're alive and well is a reason to be thankful, this time of year is when we have the opportunity to be especially mindful.
Here are a few things I'm thankful for:
-Growing with my HSE family for the past 8 years
-The opportunity to celebrate another year of life (11/05)
-Sharing my love of all things mental health and wellness
If you would like to share something you're thankful for, swing by fill out a card.

FALL READING CHALLENGE
We are excited to kick off our Fall Reading Challenge! The linked document explains all details of the challenge and includes the Google Form for 3rd-7th grade to complete for each book that is read. While there are prizes available for students (and for teachers!), ultimately, we want each student to develop a love of reading.
Additionally, research shows that daily reading helps to improve brain connectivity, increases vocabulary and comprehension, and aids in preventing cognitive decline as you age.

Tardy Policy to class:
Based on the handbook: The school’s tardy policy has been developed to emphasize the importance of each student arriving on time to school every day and remaining in the classroom for the entire period. Learning personal responsibility by arriving at school and class on time is an integral part of the school’s standard of excellence, which helps prepare students for success. The student’s responsibility is to move quickly and safely through the school's hallway and report to class before the tardy bell rings. It is the student’s responsibility to BE ON TIME to class! Here are the consequences for being tardy to class.

Message from our Admin
Hello HSE Family,
For morning drop off, we're requiring all parents to stay in their car and follow morning drop off either in the front of the school or the North arrival area.
Please do not park in the campus area to walk your students. Parents are supposed to stay in their cars and drive to the drop-off areas so that students can get out of the cars.
For the safety of our students and yours, please do not park on Brook River Drive and walk your child across Gessner Road. Gessner Road is a very busy road with a set speed limit of 40 MPH. Also, DO NOT STOP AND DROP YOUR CHILD OFF GESSNER ROAD! Thank you for understanding!
We will keep the first U-Turn open when you come from Gessner Rd (It was closed today but it will not be closed again). Please do not use the second U-Turn and please do not cut in line.
We will have a police officer several days a week to reinforce these issues.
Have a good day!
NO STUDENT DROP-OFF IS ALLOWED BEFORE 7:00AM!
8th Graders and HSE HS Students who are dropped off in the morning
Dear Parents, please drop your 8th grader(s) or high schooler(s) off next to the side walk (which is the 3rd lane,-rightmost lane or outer lane). It keeps the traffic flowing and makes a shorter distance for the students to get to the sidewalk. After dropping them off, parents will still take the 3rd lane to drop off their HSE elem/middle school students at the North drop-off.
Dismissal for High School Siblings
Effective Tuesday, September 6, 2022, if you have children that attend both at HSE Elementary campus and at HSE High campus, dismissal will be from HSE High instead of HSE Elementary.
How will this work:
- Three employees from Harmony School of Excellence Elementary campus will gather the students at 3:10 P.M. At 3:15 P.M., the students will start to walk to HSE High by utilizing the soccer field.
- You may pick up your child between the hours of 3:30 P.M. – 3:40 P.M. utilizing the car tag that was assigned to you at the beginning of the school year on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from HSE High.
- On Wednesdays you will pick up your child between the hours of 2:40 P.M.- 2:50 P.M. from HSE High.
- Please note, if we have inclement weather such as rain, hail, lightning, etc, you will have to go to both campuses to pick up your child. If your child has a club at HSE K-7, you will need to pick up your child on that day from the HSE Elementary campus.
If your child attends Harmony School of Advancement and they ONLY have a sibling at HSE Elementary campus, you will pick the students up at HSE Elementary campus from the North dismissal area.
If your child attends both HSE campuses you will pick them up at HSE High.
Sorry for the inconvenience this may cause, we decided to make this change in order to have a smoother and faster dismissal for both campuses.
Please email mgordon@harmonytx.org or tiffany.foster@harmonytx.org if you have any questions or concerns.
