The Manning Weekly Newsletter
October 9, 2020
Manning Community,
There will be a chance for families to make a change between the remote and hybrid learning option for next semester beginning January 6th, 2021. We will be sending out a survey to our families on November 9th and the survey will close on November 20th. Only families that would like to change their learning preference (remote to hybrid OR hybrid to remote) will need to fill out this survey. If you are satisfied with your students current learning preference, you will NOT need to fill out this survey and they will continue to be either hybrid or remote learning students next semester.
Also, please make sure you look at your students schedule below as it is different due to fall break next week, 10/15-10/18.
Finally, I thought I would leave you all with a quote this week that has always been meaningful and something that as a previous athletic director, I shared with my student athletes from time to time. It's a reminder to all of us that we do have control over how we react to the myriad events that occur around us, some of them within our locus of control and some outside of that locus of control.
"Life is 10 percent what happens to me and 90 percent how I react to it." -Lou Holtz

Thank you for the week with conferences. If you were unable to meet with us, please let any of us know via email and we can schedule a time during school hours. One of the advantages of being remote is we have flexibility if needed.
Next week's schedule is shortened, so please be aware! Monday is normal, TUESDAY is an Asynchronous schedule day, and WEDNESDAY will be using Friday's asynchronous schedule.
We have heard concerns about kids and families wanting to connect with one another or more with the teachers. We are having continued conversations about ways to both respect this need and the health concerns that probably made you request remote learning over in person hybrid learning. If you have suggestions, please let us know.
Thank you for your support of your child and Manning!

Mobile Mustang students can come to either of these they wish to.

A Message from the PTA
The Manning PTA thanks you for your continuing support! We are grateful to everyone who came to Chipotle night (we brought in $778!) and to all those who have generously contributed to our beginning of the year donation drive.
If you’ll be shopping during Amazon Prime days on October 13 and 14, remember you can go to smile.amazon.com when you shop and select Manning PTA in Golden, Colorado.
Also, please mark your calendars for Monday, October 19 for our fundraising event at Bob’s Atomic Burgers.
It is our tradition to provide food for the teachers at conference time, and this year we are providing dinner from Chipotle. Thanks to our teachers and staff for your dedication to our students and your commitment to their education!
Join us for a special October General Meeting on Thursday, October 22. We're excited to have Kari Gray, our Social Emotional Learning Specialist, share with us what SEL is and does as a practice. Additionally, Kari will be providing tips on how to emotionally support our middle schoolers during hybrid and online learning during our October meeting.

Everyone in Putnam's Period 2B did an awesome job with our Reintroduction of Wolves debate. They had solid rebuttals and shared multiple pieces of evidence from credible resources. Great job class!
Putnam's Period 3B - Excellent job everyone with our Reintroduction of Wolves debate. I know you may not have agreed with your assigned role, but you still provided valid evidence. Stasa - Great opening statement and rebuttals!
SEL Corner....a place to fill up your bucket
Belonging is an incredibly healing experience. Finding spaces where our personalities, interests, communication style, and the like make sense allows us at least one area that we feel like we don’t have to work as hard. For some this is in the studio with fellow artists, in discussions with people of similar passions, on the field, and family and friends. There are so many ways to belong. And sometimes it can feel like we aren’t quite finding that place or those people. There is so much squishiness in this search- we may feel a portion of ourselves belong or feel off in other ways. We are often drawn to the binary belief of either/or, but in reality, it is often both/and. That is some ways we feel belonging and other parts of ourselves don’t quite match. Navigating the squishiness can build our resilience and self-awareness. Our hope at Manning, through the journey of this school year is that we can be creative in finding these feelings even with the physical distance.
As your Social Emotional Learning Specialist, I have many interests, one is around how connected our students are. I am collecting data to create a social network of Manning to measure and assess one aspect of the wellness of our community. This data would be collected three times through the year. There are only 2 prompts: 1) Name 0-5 students at Manning you consider a friend 2) List all the adults at Manning you trust. The closer to 100% of our student population we receive data from, the more comprehensive my supports and interventions can be. Of course, participation is only encouraged. This link will bring you to our Social Network form, please share the link with your student(s). Data will be collected through November 6.
I am offering two sources to connect- every other Mondays at 930 am and every other Tuesdays at 3 pm. These will be offered on discordant weeks. Options are provided from now through the end of October, more dates will be added once a few meetings have been held. A zoom link will be emailed the night before, or once all slots are filled. Use this Sign Up Genius to reserve your spot. I will bring topics for discussion; however, we can veer from the prepared topic and discuss what is going on for either your student or our community at large as it relates to social and emotional needs. Topics like stress, time management, anxiety, friend stuff, or everyone’s favorite: puberty. If these times don’t work and you’d still like to chat, please reach out. I am eager to support and partner with you. Want some ideas or short guided practices (and poorly told jokes), check out my YouTube page @sel_by_gray on instagram
