Principal's Message

Dear West TV families,


We had a terrific first week of school!


I look forward to seeing families this evening at the West TV PTC Back to School Family Picnic and next week at Back to School Night (see below for Back to School Night information).


This year after dismissal families can mingle on the school grounds until 3:00pm. Please do not stay later as our on site day care will be using the playground/field from 3:00pm to 3:30pm. Students cannot stay after school if unsupervised by an adult.


Student Arrival - Morning Drop Off

  • Students can arrive at 7:45am. Please do not have your child arrive before that time as there is no adult supervision. Students will walk to the covered area on the playground and be supervised by Ms. Cereda and Mrs. Anderson until the bell rings at 7:50am unless they are having breakfast - all breakfast eaters can go directly into the cafeteria at 7:45am.

  • At 7:50am all students are able to go directly to class.

  • All cars and buses will drop off ONLY in the right lane

  • Our goal is to get cars in and out of the car drop off lane as quickly as possible since both cars and buses will be using the same lane to drop off students. You do not have to be at the very front of the drop off line to let your student out.

  • If you need to assist your child in any way with getting out of the car, please do not use the car drop off lane - instead we ask that you pull into a parking space in the lower parking lot and walk your child over to the flag pole and say goodbye.

  • If the car drop off line is too long, feel free to park and walk your student to the flagpole.


Student Dismissal - After School Pick Up

  • Students will be dismissed at 2:35pm.

  • Students that ride a bus will go directly to the bus.

  • Parents that walk to the school will wait next to the big tree that is just behind the flagpole with the benches underneath (between the school and playground)

  • Parents that drive to school to pick up their student will get in the left lane and pull up to the gym doors underneath the breezeway - students will wait inside the gym and be brought out to cars picking up (drivers are asked to place a paper in driver’s side window with the names of student and classroom teacher to assist the staff when retrieving students from the gym - here’s a template you can use: template)


How do I put money on my child's lunch account?

There are two ways to add money to your child's lunch account:

1) pay at school; cash or checks are accepted in the school cafeteria (please put the name and student ID number on the envelope or in the memo line of the check)

2) pay online; SchoolCafé can be used for online payments. There’s a small fee for using SchoolCafé to make deposits. You will need to know your child's student ID number.


How much does breakfast and lunch cost?

Breakfast costs $1.65; lunch costs $3.05.


How do families apply for free or reduced-cost school meals?

If you believe your student qualifies for free or reduced-cost meals, please visit the Meal Benefits webpage to apply.


Scarlet Valentine

Back to School Night

Back to School Night is Thursday, September 15th - 6:00-7:30pm


All parents and guardians are invited to this event.


We will begin with a presentation by our Principal, Scarlet Valentine, and Parent Teacher Club (PTC) representatives. All Specialists (Music, PE, Library, Technology, ELL, Counselor, School Social Worker, Student Success Coach and Academic Coach) will be introduced in the gym by the Principal and then go to the library for the remainder of the event for conversations.


Each classroom teacher (K-5) will give two identical presentations about their curriculum, homework expectations, classroom routines & procedures and special activities for the school year: one from 6:25 to 6:55pm and another from 7:00 to 7:30pm.


This event is intended to be for adults only.


BTSN Schedule

6:00-6:20 Meet in the gym with the Principal, PTC reps & Specialists

6:25-6:55 Session 1 in your child's classroom

7:00-7:30 Session 2 (repeat of Session 1) in your child's classroom

COVID-19

IF A VACCINATED OR UNVACCINATED STAFF OR STUDENT HAS TESTED POSITIVE FOR COVID-19:


  • The staff member or student must isolate at home for 5 days. Here's how to count: Day 0 is the day when symptoms begin or an individual receives a positive test result. The next day is Day 1 of the 5-day isolation.

  • If the staff member or student is fever-free for 24 hours (without the use of fever-reducing medication) and other symptoms have improved, the individual can return to the work site on Day 6. Otherwise, the staff or student member should remain at home until fever-free and symptoms improve.

  • When the staff member or student returns to school, they are highly encouraged to wear a well-fitting mask for an additional 5 days

Masks

Mask wearing is optional at all times during the school day.


Physical Distancing

Students are no longer required to be physically distanced.


Handwashing/Sanitizing

Students will be encouraged to wash their hands or sanitize before eating and when transitioning in and out of the classroom.


First Day of School

Students in grades 1 through 5 will begin on Tuesday, September 6.

Please note: the first day of school for Kindergarten students is not the same day as students in grades 1 through 5.


Sep 8 - First day of school for Kindergarten students (last name starting with the letter A-L)

Sep 9 - First day of school for Kindergarten students (last name starting with the letter M-Z)

Sep 12 - First day of school for all Kindergarten students together


School start/end time

The school day begins at 8:00am and ends at 2:35pm.


Student arrival time

Students can arrive anytime between 7:45-8:00am (for safety reasons students are not allowed to arrive before 7:45am as there will be no adult supervision). Students arriving after 7:50am will go directly to class through the cafeteria. Students arriving between 7:45-7:50am will be supervised under the covered area and stand in grade level lines until the bell rings at 7:50am. Students having breakfast can go into the cafeteria at 7:45am.


Breakfast and Lunch

Breakfast and lunch are served beginning the first day of school. Students may arrive for breakfast in the cafeteria at 7:45am. Meals are no longer free to all students (last year breakfast and lunch meals were free to all students in the district).


Meal prices for the 2022-2023 school year: Breakfast $1.65 - Lunch $3.05


Attendance Line

Our school has a 24-hour school Attendance Line. If your child is absent from school for any reason, please call 503-356-2511. Please refrain from calling the school office. The Attendance Line is checked multiple times each day, so please do not call the main office to report an absence.


Earbuds/Headphones

We would like each family to provide their child(ren) with their own personal earbuds/headphones for use with chromebooks and iPads. Send the earbuds/headphones to school as soon as you are able. If there is a financial hardship, please contact the school office.


Enrollment Verification

Enrollment verification is all online. Please take the opportunity to update important family information, give technology permissions, and acknowledge reading important school and District information. Beaverton School District Student/Family Handbook and West TV Family Handbook

The District expects families to read the BSD Student & Family Handbook. West TV has two additional handbooks. One is the West TV Family Handbook and the second is our Recess Handbook. Please read all handbooks thoroughly so you and your child understand BSD and West TV expectations. The handboooks can be found on our school website.


Most policies and procedures in the handbooks are developed to enhance opportunities for learning, or to keep our school a safe place for all students and staff. The District requires that we have each family acknowledge that they have received, read, and discussed the Student/Family Handbook with their children.


West TV PTC (Parent Teacher Club)

The West TV PTC (Parent Teacher Club) is comprised of West TV parents/guardians who volunteer their time to organize opportunities for families to connect and also fundraise for programs and extra curricular activities for students and to provide support for the needs of teachers and the school. The PTC Board meets once each month in the evening and all parents/guardians are welcome to attend the meetings. PTC information will be emailed to you every week throughout the school year on Mondays in the "Monday Minute".


Please consider donating your time, energy, and ideas for West TV and the PTC. There are currently several positions open and these programs can’t be provided without volunteer support. Go to the PTC Website to see a list of open positions.


West TV All Star News, PTC Newsletter & Beaverton School District News

In an effort to reduce the amount of paper used for communication, most of the information shared by the school, the PTC, and District will be through email and the school and district websites.


The school newsletter (All Star News) and PTC Newsletter (Monday Minute) are emailed to you. Emails will include school and PTC flyers, community flyers, and other helpful resources and information.


Bus Route Information

Using your child's student ID number, you may look up the specific route and bus stop information by visiting Transportation website. The Transportation Department will send an email or autodial phone call to families with bus stop information.


Students are expected to be at their bus at least five minutes early until our drivers learn their routes. Don’t worry if the bus is late for pick-up and drop-off during the first few weeks of school. Please note, bus drivers do not wait for an adult to be present at the afternoon bus stop.


Parking Lot Safety

Our school has a very small and busy parking lot. Students who walk to school or ride bikes are asked to be extremely cautious. It is important for students to remember to watch the crossing guard at the crosswalk and obey the stop signs. A crossing guard will lead students across the driveway to the gym and the routine is reversed for walking home.

A school events calendar can be found on the West TV school website. This calendar has our most current events and is updated on a regular basis.


Volunteering

Please volunteer at West TV! There are many activities and programs that you can support by volunteering. If you are interested in helping out, please respond to PTC requests for help. A background check is required for all volunteers for all Beaverton schools. Please visit the District website and click on Community and Volunteer. It can take several weeks to get on the approved volunteer list at the beginning of the year, so please complete the background check as soon as possible.


All volunteers must be registered in our volunteer management system and complete a criminal background check.


Will volunteers be required to show proof of vaccination?

All volunteers will be required to show proof of vaccination to volunteer in a school or an exemption.

YMCA

Each year at West TV there is an on site child care provider - it is the YMCA. YMCA offers both before and after school child care. Please contact the YMCA directly to reserve a spot for your child. Call 503-608-3126.


Barnes-Miller Learning Tree

This child care option is off site - one of our school buses will bring students to/from the school that attend Barnes-Miller Learning Tree. Please contact them directly to reserve a spot for your child. Call 503-292-7847.

Thrive

Little Free Library

History of the Little Free Library

The Little Library was started by Andy Owens, who attended West TV from 1992 -1996. He decorated the Little Free Library and every week would come to West TV to clean up and reload books for children of all ages. It was a free library and children could take books, borrow books, or leave books.


Andy Owens passed away in 2017


All families are welcome to use the Little Free Library - donate a book, take a book or both!
