Parent News - Desplazarse hacia abajo para Español
We are officially at the midterm of the third quarter. It's been a crazy year, but we have loved getting to know our students, even through distance learning. The good news is that there are still many great things happening for students at South Meadows. We have students winning chess tournaments, kids creating robots, students working with college professors on electron microscopes, and each day, teachers are working to connect with their students and help them gain knowledge that will help them succeed in life. If you or your student is struggling, there are so many support opportunities available to you. Please reach out to your advisory teacher to get some extra help if you need it.
Now that we are in March, we have a lot of things coming up. 8th graders will begin forecasting for their high school classes, and our 7th graders (and incoming 7th graders for next year) will do the same after spring break. One thing we are excited for next year is our new Career and Technical Education Lab. Students can take a semester-long elective where they explore 18 hands-on career paths such as flight and drone technology, robotics, pneumatics, and many, many more! This is from a large Hillsboro Schools Foundation grant, and we are excited to put it into action so our kids learn more about potential fields of work and study as they move into high school and beyond. We are so excited to receive this grant!
We want to finish this quarter strong so students are ready for the final stretch of this crazy school year. As you know, the hope is to offer students a "hybrid" learning experience starting in mid-April where they will be able to come in-person two days a week (so we can split the student population for safety) and the other days they will do distance learning. Families will have the option of choosing to stay in 100% distance learning if they prefer. You should receive a survey asking your preference, and with more explanation of what hybrid will look like, this week. Once that comes, and we know how many students we are planning to have return to in-person learning this year, we'll send out more detailed videos and information of what to do when hybrid begins. Thanks for your patience and support as we have had to navigate through many challenges to getting our kids back to us. Once more information is ready, we'll hold a Question and Answer event to address any concerns or questions you have.
Even though we are currently in Distance Learning, we are trying to provide lots of ways for kids to connect to school and clubs. Here is a current list of what we have put together (with more on the way). We hope everyone finds something here that interests them, and we'll keep working to expand this list so everyone connects to a group.
We've been working all year on character development in advisory classes. This past month has been a focus on kindness. Check in with your student to see how they have worked to gain a better understanding about the perspectives and interests of others. We've also been celebrating and learning about different cultures we find at SMMS. Here's our current list of culture celebrations and we hope to keep growing it. Let me know if you want to add something about your family's culture by emailing me at welchj@hsd.k12.or.us
