Board Meeting Highlights
Jefferson Union High School District
March 30, 2021
Return to Campus Updates
After being invited to select an instructional model, 951 students (23%) of students opted in to hybrid learning. The date to begin hybrid instruction will be determined after the following steps:
- Finalize school site plans
- Reach an agreement with AFT 1481
- Communicate cohorts, bell schedules, and student orientation / training
- 88% of staff have been vaccinated; a very small number of these have declined vaccination. We continue to do individual outreach to ensure all staff have the opportunity to be vaccinated
- Food Services: Beginning after spring break, food will be provided for all children under 18 on Wednesdays only, and packets will contain five days of food beginning this week. Students participating in hybrid learning will have brunch outdoors, and receive lunch to go once hybrid begins.
- The JUHSD COVID-19 / Return to Campus web site, located at this link, offers the latest, most comprehensive information about returning to campus and the safeguards in place to protect staff and students during COVID-19.
Student Advisory Council Survey Results Presentation
Students completing the survey expressed that they were facing many challenges both from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, and from the isolation of distance learning.
Based on these results, the Advisory Council requested increased communication about the district's robust wellness resources for students, which are available at this link.
Instructional Coaching Update
The presentation provides important updates on how teachers have navigated the challenges of learning how to teach in a distance learning model. View the video of the presentation at this link, or download the slides from the presentation at this link (this will automatically download the file).
Resolution Condemning Hate and Violent Acts Against the Asian American Community
The Board of Trustees, Student Trustees, and Superintendent signed on to the following resolution:
Whereas, despite the World Health Organization and other organizations’ warnings, some political leaders have continued to use geographic descriptors for COVID-19, fueling the expansion of ethnic and racial hate and discrimination, especially against members of the Asian American community; and
Whereas, Stop AAPI Hate, a project at San Francisco State University, reports there have been at least 3,795 incidents of anti-Asian hate in the United States since the coronavirus pandemic began, and of those, 1,691 incidents took place in California, and at least 708 in the Bay Area; and
Whereas, Asian American residents of San Mateo County and elsewhere continue to report disturbing incidents of hate against them and their families, including the bullying of their children; and
Whereas, these continuing hateful acts and words have left our county’s Asian American community feeling unsafe and unseen; and
Whereas, racist language and behavior can have a profound and lasting impact on children and adds to the stress they are experiencing as a result of the COVID-19 health crisis; and
Whereas, we all have the opportunity to stand up against racism and hate and create a caring, compassionate, and supportive community; and
Whereas, county and education leaders have the opportunity to speak out against anti-Asian hate and discrimination and ensure their agencies take steps to protect the rights and safety of Asian Americans;
Now, Therefore, Be It Resolved that the Jefferson Union High School District Board of Education and the Jefferson Union High School District Superintendent condemn anti-Asian hate speech and behavior and urge all San Mateo County residents to unite against hate, racism, and xenophobia, especially during these challenging times where unity and compassion are most needed.
