Congratulations to the Kirkwood High School Class of 2022..."The BEST IN THE LOU!"
Thanks to the Kiwanis Club
The Glendale-Kirkwood Kiwanis Club presented each of the 449 KSD kindergarten students with an early reader book as part of the service club’s Early Reader Program.
The program was initiated in spring 2006 when the Glendale-Kirkwood Kiwanis Club gifted books to each of KSD’s 275 kindergarteners. Over the years, the Kiwanis Early Reader Program has become an annual “graduation” gift for KSD kindergartners and celebrates of the young students’ love of reading.

Nipher Middle School Named as First Place Winner in Statewide Green Schools Quest
Congratulations to Nipher Middle School who was announced as the winner in the Middle School Division in the 15th annual Green Schools Quest competition. This year, 31 schools competed in the quest.
For their project, Nipher students set out to work on the school’s sustainability initiative by improving existing outdoor learning spaces. The sixth and seventh grade homeroom classes of Courtney Karr, Kim Breckenridge, Mark Banaszak and Dan Brady collaborated on ideas to improve the school’s outdoor spaces.
The group landed on the project: "A Year of Growth: Implementing Sustainability Through Homeroom Classes." The project involved four related areas of focus: chickens, vegetable gardens, a pollinator garden, and bees. Work began with fundraising efforts to build an expanded chicken enclosure and purchase new beehives. With the collected funds, the team got to work and installed low tunnels over raised beds to extend the growing season of vegetable crops and cleaned seeds of native plants before performing a seed stomp in the new pollinator garden.
The project took six months to complete. Thanks to their efforts, the Nipher community has a beautiful, sustainable learning space. “Our project highlighted the interconnectedness of our spaces and reinforced our role as global citizens,” said Courtney Karr, Nipher French teacher and Green Schools Quest co-lead teacher along with Kim Breckenridge. Nipher principal Dr. Laura Havener shared her praise for the group’s efforts, “As students collaborated to improve our outdoor spaces for our school community, they also made a positive impact on the earth and made strides toward our school sustainability goals.”
KSD BOE Recognizes Our Teachers of the Year
On May 9, the Kirkwood Board of Education acknowledged the Kirkwood School District (KSD) Teachers of the Year for 2022-23. Each Kirkwood school selected a School Teacher of the Year from nomination forms submitted by faculty and staff in their individual schools. The KSD schools announced their teacher of the year in February. In March, Katie Meyers was announced as the Kirkwood School District Teacher of the Year for 2022-23. Katie was selected through an interview process conducted by the Teacher of the Year selection committee.
After each teacher was recognized, KSD superintendent Dr. David Ulrich along with the board members shared their congratulations and appreciation to the teachers of the year.
“On behalf of the board of education and the KSD leadership team, congratulations,” said Ulrich. “This truly is something special. I appreciate you, and I promise I know what’s been asked of you this year and in particular, these past few years.”
“We are thankful for each and every one of you,” said KSD board president Jean Marie Andrews. “Your peers saw something in you and chose you to represent their school. The words your peers said about you show what kind of teachers you are. It makes me so proud and grateful to have such great teachers in our schools.”

Annual Update - Please Take a Moment and Complete
This is an opportunity to update student information such as addresses, phone numbers, emergency contacts, and medical needs.
Also, if you are enrolling a new student to K-12 KSD schools who currently DOES NOT attend a K-12 KSD school you may add the new student to this annual update process while you are completing the annual update for another student. This is a wonderful opportunity to register any students who need to register as kindergarteners for next school year.
COVID Dashboard and Report Positive Case Form
Masks are recommended, but not required, in all KSD schools. If the building COVID-19 positivity rate reaches 1.5% at an individual school, students and staff will be required to wear masks at that school for at least two weeks. We will include daily updates on the number of cases for each school on our dashboard and notify families and staff if a change to masking status is needed. View the dashboard by visiting kirkwoodschools.org/coviddashboard
The primary role of the dashboard is to provide data specific to the potential for in-school transmission. One of the ways we can ensure the dashboard is as up-to-date as possible is quick and accurate reporting of any student that tests positive for COVID. Families can self report a positive case by using completing the Report a Positive Case form.
