Drug Dependency/Substance Abuse

PROJECT

Alcohol

Alcohol has a chemical in it called Ethanol, which is a by product of yeast or bacteria when they react with sugars in food. This substance is used by consumption and has a desired affect of mainly sleep and muscle relaxation. It effects the brain a lot by interfering with brain communication pathways, affecting the way the brain functions and it's appearance, changes mood/behavior, and makes it harder to think and move. Other health effects of this substance are cirrhosis in the liver, cancer, and stroke. The form that alcohol is found in is a liquid drinkable form. Detoxification programs like rehab and AA meetings are available in order to become sober.

Cannabis

Cannabis, also known as: Weed, Pot, Marijuana, Hash, Hemp, Wacky Tobbacky, Devil's Lettuce, etc. has a key chemical in it called THC (tetrahydrocannabinol). The substance is typically used by smoking it but you can also ingest it and breathe in vapor from it. The desired effect often consumed for its physical and mental effects, such as heightened mood, relaxation, and an increase in appetite. The biggest effect to the brain is loss of memory. Other health effects include: dry mouth, impaired motor skills, red eyes, and feelings of paranoia or anxiety. The forms of cannabis never really end. You have dried flower buds, kief, hash, vapor, raisins, even BUTTER! The detoxification programs available for weed is rehab.

Cocaine

Cocaine, also known as coke has a main chemical named benzoylmethylecgonine. The substance is snorted, inhaled, or injected into the veins. The desired effect of cocaine is an intense feeling of happiness and an escape from reality. It affects the brain by inhibiting the reuptake of serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine . This results in greater concentrations of these three neurotransmitters in the brain. It can easily cross the blood-brain barrier and may lead to the breakdown of it. Other health affects include: stroke, heart attack, and lung problems for those who smoke it, blood infections, and death. The forms of cocaine are salts, freebase, crack, and coca leaf infusions. The detoxification programs available for the substance is once again, a rehabilitation program.

Hallucinogen

Hallucinogens have nitrogen in them and are classified as alkaloids. Hallucinogens are taken by mouth, in a pill form or mushrooms. Hallucinogens have chemical structures similar to those of natural neurotransmitters (acetylcholine, serotonin, or catecholamine like). The desired effect of hallucinogens are to hallucinate and escape reality. It affects the brain by disrupting the interaction of nerve cells and the neurotransmitter serotonin. Other health affects include seizures, muscle weakness, dilated pupils, etc. The forms are mushrooms, LSD, and mescaline. The detoxification program available is rehabilitation.

Heroin

Heroin has a main chemical called diacetylmorphine in it. Heroin can be snorted, smoked, or shot up into your veins. The desired effect of heroin is to feel a pleasurable sensation and become drowsy and "feel heavy". It affects the brain by blocking pain messages transmitted through the spinal cord from the body. Other health affects include: insomnia, restlessness, muscle pain, etc. The forms of heroin are black heroin, white heroin, brown heroin, and tar heroin. The detoxification program is rehab.

Meth

Meth is also known as methamphetamine can be smoked or shot up in the veins. The desired effects for meth is that it can elevate mood, increase alertness, concentration, and energy in fatigued individuals, reduce appetite and promote (initial) weight loss. It affects the brain by blocking it's signals to the body. Other health effects include: unpredictable and rapid mood swings, prominent delusions and violent behavior. The forms of meth are the kind that you can smoke and the liquid that you can shoot up. The detoxification programs are rehab.

Nicotine

Nicotine is a potent parasympathetic alkaloid. Nicotine is usually smoked or vaped. The desired effects is to calm you and to give you a little nicotine high. It affects the brain by increasing the level of neurotransmitters and chemicals that modulate how your brain works. Other health effects are: cancer, cardiovascular disease, birth defects, etc. The forms are the smokeable kind like the kind that are in cigarettes and the liquid you can vape. Rehab or a support group are detoxification programs available for nicotine.
