Ripon Cathedral School Update
Week ending Friday 30th November 2018
Our Big Read Day
Reading fun
The whole school enjoyed a 'Big Read' day on Thursday. Everyone appreciated time to share their favourite books as well as pairing up with another class to read together. There were lots of busy, happy readers and so much fun around the school: EYFS children were able to stand up in front of their classmates and share their favourite books; Year 1 became book illustrators; Year 2 loved acting out book characters and playing 'guess the character' (although Miss Haslam found this a challenge!); Year 3 wrote some super book reports; Year 4 shared their favourite books in a 'speed date' style and Year 5 'tweeted' about their favourite books. Year 6 took part in a comic workshop at Ripon library in the morning...more details later in the Update -and became Shakesperian actors in the afternoon ready to 'flash mob' worship today!
The book swap was particularly popular and children have asked if we can do this regularly- a great idea!
During the day the school worked on developing the new rewards system for reading, which the children are very excited about. This will be shared with parents next week so keep an eye in your child's book bag.
Comic Book Workshop
The creative side of our Year 6 ..
On Thursday, Year 6 pupils had the privilege to visit Ripon Library and work with the extremely talented Kev F Sutherland. The library kindly invited the children to a free visual literacy workshop with the talented Beano, Marvel and Dr Who Comic writer and illustrator. Mr Sutherland talked to the children about his experience and got them to produce a comic book. He also drew a caricature/comic drawing of each member of the class, for the children to keep and take home.

Creation and Science: Complementary or Conflicting? Year 6 show their serious side ..
On Wednesday, Year 6 had the opportunity to have several volunteers to come in and discuss their views with them. The class have been exploring the question: Creation and Science: Complementary or Conflicting? Our volunteers discussed with the children their views, while answering any questions the children had prepared in relation to the question. The discussion was only meant to be for 15 minutes but I think it is safe to say our volunteers enjoyed it so much, that they stayed for a further 15 minutes, working with another group. Year 6 would like to say a very BIG thank you to all the volunteers that gave up their time to help with our learning and understanding.
Oscar's TImes and Dates
Can we please politely remind users of our breakfast club that doors open at 8am? Please don't drop off your children early, even if the front door is open, as we do not have staffing in place to look after the children before 8am. Also, Mrs Armstrong does her best to open the door at 8 o'clock, so please don't ring the doorbell before that time. Thank you for your understanding and continuing support of Oscar's.
Friday 7th and Friday 21st December
Oscar's is not open after school on these days, sorry for any inconvenience. Due to the set up of the booking site, you will not find it possible to book breakfast club either, but it is open! Please email school if you need the breakfast club on Friday 7th or Friday 21st December, thank you.
Celebrate the New Year at Oscar's!
MESSAGE FROM THE FRIENDS
Thank You!
Helpers Wanted (please!)
It's Christmas Fair time - THURSDAY 6TH DECEMBER FROM 3PM TO 5.30PM - Can you help run a stall? We need quite a few parents to join us to run the games, refreshments, the raffle and for general help. In the past it's worked well if people 'find a friend' and run a stall together. Then you can find time to enjoy the fair too!
Donations
Hampers - Please keep the donations rolling in for the Wednesday 5th December deadline. In particular, we'd love more baking items for the Year 6 hamper, and gardening for Year 3, but all other contributions are really appreciated.
Jolly Jars - we have a few empty jars if you'd just like to bring in small items to fill them. More filled jars would also be great!
