LWSH Celebrates Black History
Dear LWSH Families and Caregivers,
Greetings LWSH Families, Caregivers, and Scholars,
Welcome to the second half of the school year! We have ended our first semester and parent-teacher conferences to discuss semester one grades and progress will be held on Thursday, February 6th from 1:35pm - 5:35pm. Our staff have been preparing our scholars for Student-Led Conferences. We expect our scholars to have ownership over their work and to track their own progress. Therefore, you should attend parent-teacher conferences with your scholar. They will also need to bring their device so that they can go into Schoology to pull up their work and explain how they are progressing toward mastery of the key concepts in each class. We are looking forward to seeing our scholars take the lead and accountability for their own learning!
Parent-teacher conferences will not be the only thing happening on Thursday, February 6th. There will also be a Mandatory Senior FAFSA Night from 1:35pm - 5:35pm in the 1st floor Media Center. We ask that families bring their latest tax forms and bank statements needed to complete a FAFSA. Completing a FAFSA is a critical step in getting financial aid for the Fall semester of the college or university your child will be attending. All students whose families attend will be entered into a raffle to win a pair of free prom tickets. There will also be a Belize Field Trip and The Mandel Youth Humanities Academy (MYHA) informational sessions that will take place from 2:00pm - 2:30pm and 4:00pm - 4:30pm in room 215. These are opportunities you don't want to miss out on!
NWEA testing for grades 9 and 10 will begin on Wednesday, February 1st starting with Math. The Reading test will be on Thursday, February 2nd and make-ups will be on Friday. NWEA Map is a benchmark test that helps us predict how students will perform on the Ohio State Test in the spring. Therefore, it is important that students do their absolute best so that we can provide appropriate interventions or advancements according to their performance. The Ohio English Language Proficiency Test is another assessment that begins February 13th that our English Language Learners will need to be ready for. There are listening and speaking parts to determine how they are progressing with English language fluency. Just as we do with the NWEA results, we provide specific interventions based on where students are and where they need to be to reach proficiency.
Last, but certainly not least, I would like to highlight all of the supports that we have for our scholars to grow academically and be successful on standardized tests. We have our after-school program through Esperanza every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 3:35pm - 5:35pm. We offer test prep for OST and SAT, classroom tutoring, homework help and more! This program also includes stress relief, fitness, financial literacy, and other non-academic activities. Check out the flyer below! You should also know that EVERY LWSH SCHOLAR has access to a LIVE TUTOR 24 hours a day, 7 days a week through Varsity Tutors. Whether it be homework help, or needing assistance preparing for a test, this program can be accessed directly through your child's Clever account to meet with a live tutor on-demand. Instructions on how to do this is below.
As always, we thank you for your partnership as we work to prepare our scholars to Transform Themselves and their Community in the healthcare industry here at LWSH. For questions, please feel free to call the school at 216-838-7100.
Sincerely,
Juliet King
Your Proud LWSH Principal
