Beautiful Creatures

Book vs. Movie

Reading the Book to Watching the Movie

Reading Beautiful Creatures, by: Kim Garcia was fantastic! I was left with my imagination to figure the way they talked and looked and acted. Much as I want to say I liked the movie, directed by Richard LaGravenese. It left no imagination to me, and it was barely even about the book. They took out characters, and Ethan's personality was changed. Events played differently and some scenes didn't even make any sense. I had to pause it a few times just to make sure I understood what had happened.

Different Scenes

In the book, Ethan wasn't aware of caster abilities until farther in and Lena was able to speak to him in his mind. However, in the movie, she told him quicker and they couldn't hear each other in their mind. My favorite scene in the movie was when Lena and Ridley were facing off at the dinner table and it started spinning. Larkin, Lena's cousin just kept eating! In the book, a hurricane wind burst though the surrounding windows and blew Ridley out the door. They cut out a lot of scenes that happened in the book. The scenes are probably different because there wasn't enough time left in the movie or they didn't need them to make sense.

The Medium

"There is a light and dark side to everybody, you just have to choose for yourself which side you're gonna be."

I think that is the message of the story because Lena is at a very difficult time in her life. Her cousin had just turned dark and that doesn't help Lena with any confidence because she has no idea if she might turn dark as well. Ridley was sweet, confident and caring, but she changed on the night she turned dark. Lena desperately searched where she could for what she could do to reverse her fate, then her answers came. In a book called The Book of Moons, Lena found out that she can choose her fate but, when she chooses one side the other must die.
