A Message from Dr. Bearden

Good morning, SHE Families,

There was a lot going on at SHE during the past week and a bunch of great things coming up!

Fall Carnival: What a great carnival on Friday, October 4th!! The PTO did an amazing job with organizing and setting everything up! We had a great turnout and I enjoyed seeing all of you who were able to come out and join in on the fun!!

Parent Conferences: We hold conferences twice per year with our families. In October, the fall conference is for parents, teachers, and/or students. By this time, families should have attended or will attend fall conferences, which are scheduled over the next two weeks. Your teacher will indicate whether or not your student should attend the fall conference. In February, conferences are student-led and focused on sharing progress on meeting his/her goals as well as academic progress/standing. As a Leader In Me school, we work with our students on goal setting, planning, and monitoring as a part of our daily morning meetings, along with learning the 7 Habits of Effective People. There will be more information about the February conferences in January newsletters. If you need additional conferencing, please communicate and coordinate this with your child's teacher.

FCS Teacher Work Day and Holiday Coming Up: SHE Families, be sure to mark your calendars for Friday, October 11th and Monday, October 14th as there is no school for students on these days.

Date Change for Grandparents (Grandfriends) Breakfast: I had originally communicated that we would have a grandparents (grandfriends) breakfast in mid-October. Due to the proximity of the IOWA testing and our Thanksgiving Feast in November, this event has been moved to the second semester. We will update you with the new date and details soon.

Friday Folders: The silver Friday folder is a key way that our teachers share information with families. The folders go home every Friday, whether there are graded papers or not. Please make it a habit to check your child's backpack each Friday. Depending on the contents: review papers, provide your signature (if requested), and return the folder via your child's backpack on Monday. We appreciate your input and help with the Friday folders each week.

Coming Soon-Additional Student Activities Added to Mornings: Families, we are always looking to add new ways in which to support students academically, emotionally, and/or socially. Currently, from 7:10 until 7:40, students only have the option to go to their homeroom teacher or visit the media center. In PK, K, & 1st grade, the time in the morning is used by teachers for establishing routines and to support small groups academically. For now, this morning routine will not change and these youngest students will maintain going to their classroom each morning. PK thru 1st will still have the option to eat breakfast each morning.

However, in grades 2 thru 5, fewer students need the practice of routines and/or small group supports. Also, 2nd thru 5th grade teachers would prefer a quiet environment to support small group learning and/or study sessions. Sustained quiet can be a challenge with 20+ students coming to the classroom each morning.

Therefore, to allow 2nd thru 5th teachers and students more flexibility, beginning Thursday, November 7th, we are going to add three additional activities for supporting students from 7:10- 7:25. All activity areas will be supervised and there may be additional activities for some students, such as Summit, Student Council, Peer Readers, etc. (communicated as relevant). At 7:30, students will all report to their homeroom classrooms to put their things away, view morning announcements, and participate in their morning meetings prior to academics beginning at 8 am.

Additional Morning Activities for Grades 2nd thru 5th:

Cafeteria: In the cafeteria, students can eat breakfast; visit and talk with their grade level friends; or sit on the stage to quietly read, do homework with adult support, or work in pairs to study; The larger space easily allows for more social-type interactions and conversations to occur.

Classrooms: If a student needs extra support academically, his/her teacher will write a pass for him/her to come to classroom;

Media Center: The media center is still open for students to visit, select books, read, use technology, or play in the maker spaces;

Computer Lab: Additionally, an adult will provide supervision in the computer lab for students. There are a variety of technology-supported learning opportunities for students: iRead, iReady, make-up assessments, recovery opportunities, keyboard and word processing practice, etc. (the computer lab will be on a first come basis as space is limited)

Advanced Strategies Lab: Ms. Leeson will open the ASL classroom in the morning for students, who need a quieter place to study, do homework, or work on ALS projects. (the ASL will be on a first come basis as space is limited)

We will provide further clarity in communication of the new morning routines for students and families during the last two weeks of October. I just wanted to give you all a heads up so that you can answer any questions about the new morning activities for your child(ren) as their teachers may begin talking with them about the new activities, which will begin Thursday, November 7th.

I promise to keep you updated and, as always, thank you for reading and for your partnership! Please reach out if you have any questions or anything to share. Take care, Lorrie

Family Carpool Numbers: Please Display Your CP Number Clearly for Staff in the Afternoon

Car Pool (in the morning and during dismissal) is running smoothly for the most part. Please be sure that you are staying aware of the following:

  • Your car slows down significantly as you approach and leave the car pool areas
  • Your child only enters/exits your vehicle on the school side curb, where staff can assist
  • At arrival, please wait until your child, including his/her belongings, has completely exited your car and the door is closed before pulling away from the curb
  • At dismissal each day, please display your carpool number where our staff can clearly see it from several cars away. We suggest mounting to the backside of the passenger's side visor (flip down during carpool) or hanging it from your rear view mirror (a small hanger with clip works great). This helps us to get students quickly to the correct loading area.
  • Bring your fur friend along on Waggin' Wednesday! We have doggie treats for all of our SHE fur friends!

IF THE STAGE HAS TO BE CLOSED: LUNCH DATES ARE UNAVAILABLE ON THESE DAYS

Parents,

There are several times during the year when the stage must be closed for a variety of reasons. When the stage is closed, lunch dates are unavailable. For instance, on Friday, October 4th, our stage will be closed due to setting up the cake walk area for the carnival. Later in October, we will administer the Iowa Tests to the 3rd and 5th graders. During a state testing window and due to testing security, only Fulton County employees are allowed to be in the building. Parents and visitors may visit the front office areas only. We will do our best to give you as much notice as possible, when the stage has to be closed and/or parents are allowed in the front areas only. If your child's birthday falls on one of the days, when the stage is closed, please consider having a lunch date on a different day. We thank you for your cooperation and understanding.

We will always list days, when the stage is closed, is the calendar at the beginning of this newsletter. 2019-20 Lunch Schedules by Homeroom Teacher
