Building Facts:
Did you know that Talley Street Upper Elementary is a LEED Certified school?
LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is the most widely used green building rating system in the world.
What does a LEED certification mean for Talley?
It means that our design and construction team has put an emphasis on creating an energy efficient building that also provides a healthy and safe environment for teaching and learning. Our team worked to reduce indoor contaminants, build healthy learning spaces and increase well-being through LEED design and construction practices. This design placed an emphasis on CSD instructional practices, and learning needs. Overall, LEED has guided us through a process of building the best school environment for our children and staff. For more information about LEED and k-12 school, click here.
Other building details include:
- Oversized gymnasium, cafeteria, and staircases to account for possible growth.
- Bright colorful classrooms and common spaces, an abundance of natural light from the exterior windows in almost every room.
- Open flexible spaces
- Single user restrooms for students in academic wings
- State of the art maker space/tech lab with a shared outdoor patio
- Large art room with a kiln with a shared outdoor patio
- Pull out spaces next to classrooms for the students who need more individualized instruction
- The cafeteria has a production kitchen large enough to prepare food for other elementary schools, similar to the high school and middle school kitchens
- Wide multi-use sidewalks on school property that will tie into the Columbia street path

Pardon our Dust:
Thank you for bearing with us as we put the final touches on our new school.
Some items like landscaping, tree plantings, some IT/AV systems and a school sign, may not be complete on day one. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work to give our kids a brand new, beautiful school. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Principal Billy Heaton at bheaton@csdecatur.net.

Talley Street Transportation At-A-Glance
Logistical information:
Car Riders:
Talley Street will be a one-way street from Columbia with only a right-hand turn into the school allowed. Please do not enter from Sams street and expect to be able to take a left into the school parking lot.
When exiting the school parking lot, only a right-hand turn towards Sams street will be permitted. Parents will not be able to take a left out of the parking lot towards Columbia.
Walkers:
A four-way stop will be installed at Columbia, Talley and Shadowmoor and two crosswalks will be installed at that intersection crossing Columbia.
The City of Decatur will provide us with three crossing guards. Please see the map below for where they will be stationed.
We encourage children to walk on the sidewalk to the front of the school on Talley street and not to use the service road off of Columbia.
Bus Riders:
- We encourage you to consider sending your child to school on the bus to reduce the amount of cars on the road during school pick up and drop off.
- The bus routes for Talley Street can be found on this webpage.
Please see the Walking & Driving to Talley Street map below for additional information or check with the City of Decatur's Safe Routes to School page.

Best Routes to School:
Recommendations:
We highly suggest that our students take the bus if possible. We will have multiple bus routes this year and our goal is that no child will be on the bus more than 45 minutes.
If you cannot take the bus, we encourage you to arrive early. Arriving even 10 minutes early could ease traffic issues and help reduce your time in traffic.
If you and your child decide to walk, please do not cut through areas that are not designated entrances into the school. Safety is our top priority.
If you and your child decide to walk, please be sure to stay on the sidewalks and cross only at the designated crosswalks.
