A Note from Dr. Miles...
A Note from Dr. Miles
Good morning Parents and Guardians!
Well, this week we are closing out the second month of 2024, just don't forget that it has an added day for Leap Year! Yes, February is coming to an end and soon we hopefully will be feeling the warm sensations of Spring in the air. Are you excited that the Phillies started the spring season?
Please come and spend a bit of your time with us at the school board meeting at CASH on Tuesday, February 27th as I will be sharing some great things regarding our students and teachers of King's Highway with the community.
Black History Month Trivia: Each week I will give a trivia question. You and your child work together to get the answer. Your child brings the answer to the school on Tuesday and receives a prize for the correct answer.
Question 2: When you notice that your lightbulb hasn't blown out for some time, you can thank this African American inventor who patented a new filament that extended the bulbs lifespan.
Answer of last week's question: Gladys West
ABSENCES: YOUR CHILD'S PRESENCE IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT TO US!
Parents please be advised that when your child is absent from school, you MUST have a note explaining their absence when they return. You have three days to have the note into the office. If a note is not received in that time, it becomes an ILLEGAL/UNLAWFUL absence. You may send the note directly to the attendance secretary Ms. Kenisha Archey-Cole at archeycolek@casdschools.org. Sending notes with your child may not be received as they may forget to give them to their teacher.
According to the CASD Code of Student Conduct :
First Unlawful Absence - Parent/guardian is sent notice via regular mail of unlawful absence.
Second Unlawful Absence - Parent/guardian is sent second notice via regular mail of unlawful absence.
Third Unlawful Absence - Parent/guardian is sent third notice of unlawful absence by certified mail providing “official notice of child’s third illegal absence.”
The Guidance Counselor will schedule a school/family conference with parent/guardian to discuss the cause of the child’s irregular attendance and develop a mutually agreed upon School Attendance Improvement Plan (SAIP). Representatives from relevant and/or involved community-based agencies, child services, juvenile probation, school personnel and administration will be invited to participate in meeting.
After the third notice of unlawful absence has been issued and the SAIP meeting has been held, the next time during the school year, that the pupil is illegally absent shall constitute a violation of the compulsory attendance provisions of the Pennsylvania Public School Code.
Please feel free to contact the office for any questions you may have; 610-383-3775. We are here you serve you and assist you in any way we can.
Thank you,
Dr. Miles
Sistah Mafalda and the Kuumba Drummers Celebration of Black History Month
On Tuesday, February 2Oth, Sistah Mafalda and the Kuumba Drummers mesmerized King's Highway students with the deep sounds of the drums and song as Sistah Mafalda taught about the travels to the "New World" from Africa through rhythmic music and interactive drama. Sistah Mafalda, a trained stilt walker for more than two decades, incorporates fun dancing and playful instruments to her engaging storytelling of Africa. She provides the audience with knowledge of the variety of countries that make up African American history. The students and staff had a great time with Sistah Mafalda as they went back to class still dancing to the sounds of the drummers.
5th Grade Readers Represent KH at Black History Month Celebration
On Saturday, February 24th, students of King's Highway and their families proudly exhibited a strong sense of PRIDE at Coatesville's Black History Month pancake breakfast and celebration at City Hall. They were able to choose books of high interest and read them to community members who came out for the event. In addition, besides the delicious pancakes and sausage, they were able to apply for their library card to the Coatesville Library as well as seek out other books written by African Americans as well as others. At the end of the event, they were given the opportunity to replenish some school supplies from the Women Destined for Change who was one of the sponsors.
The students pictured from left to right are Elias Rhone (Miles), Kayden Dumisani (Kress), Heaven Harvison (Miles), and Erica Fletcher (Gerner). The students enjoyed themselves and learned about Black History in the process. I am thankful for their participation as well as the families who came with them on Saturday.
