Welcome Back!

September 2015

Dear LIWP Teachers and Friends,

Welcome to a new school year! We hope you had a relaxing, restorative summer, holding close those memories of sand between your toes and ocean breezes. At the LIWP, we had a busy summer, running the Invitational Institute for some fantastic teachers, facilitated by Nicolette James and Kathy Sokolowski and the NCC Creative Writing Retreat for Teens, facilitated by Mark Jackett and Jackie Seck McBrien. The LIWP also ran a writing retreat for teens through a partnership with the South Huntington Public Library, facilitated by Vicki Alessi and Jackie Tiernan.

Now that beach bags have been replaced by school bags, we wanted to let you know of some of the changes here at the LIWP and our upcoming events for this fall. We are hoping you can join us for one or more of these inspiring opportunities.

We want to express our gratitude and appreciation to Melanie Hammer, who will be the Director Emeritus of the LIWP. Melanie is the Dean of Arts and Humanities at Nassau Community College, a role that demands much of her time and energy. We are so grateful to Melanie for her leadership, thoughtfulness, and all she has given to the LIWP in her twelve years as Director and her vision which has helped our site to grow.

Darshna Katwala is stepping into the role of Director of the LIWP. Heidi Atlas will continue as Co-Director, joined by Kathy Neagle Sokolowski. We are looking forward to working together and creating opportunities for LIWP teachers to collaborate and support each other’s work in the classroom and beyond.

The LIWP also has a new website! It is under construction, but feel free to visit it and let us know what you think!

We are hoping to have LIWP members write a guest blog for our site each month. The blog post can be on anything related to teaching and writing. If you would like to be a guest blogger, please contact Kathy.

Long Island Writing Project

The Long Island Writing Project (LIWP) works to improve the teaching of writing and reading across grade level and discipline. As one of 200 sites of the National Writing Project, we are part of the premiere research-based, teacher-led professional development organization in the country. We believe that good education starts with effective teachers, and our workshops build on the knowledge and expertise that teachers already bring to the classroom. We believe that all children, regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, socioeconomic status, country or language of origin, sexual orientation, or resources of their school district, deserve an education that welcomes them into a community of readers, writers and learners and enables them to develop to their full capacity.
