WLWV School Board Briefs
March 14, 2023
The West Linn-Wilsonville School Board held a public meeting on Monday, March 13. The following are important news and notes from that meeting.
Classified Staff Appreciation Week
Our nutrition services team, facilities and operations staff, maintenance staff, administrative assistants, paraeducators, health assistants, IT staff, district office and programs staff, and many others each play a crucial role in nurturing “belief and belonging” in our students. They set our students up for positive outcomes through their respective roles, and regularly go above and beyond to support our students, our schools, and our district.

District Book Review Committee Makes Decision on Challenged Books
The Review Committee was created following written and verbal feedback expressing both concern and support for the nine books. The Committee was comprised of nine members, including two assistant superintendents, two teacher-librarians, one high school language arts teacher, a member of the community with public library experience, a parent with a WLWV student who expressed concerns about the materials under consideration, a parent in support of maintaining the materials, and a 17+ year old WLWV high school student. The books were examined separately to determine whether they met district criteria for school libraries set forth by the American Library Association and whether or not they are age-appropriate for the school where they are located.
The nine texts that were reviewed included: Heartstopper, Heartstopper 2, Me and Earl and the Dying Girl, Beyond Magenta, Milk and Honey, The Sun and Her Flowers, Lawn Boy, Flamer, and Crank.
Following a thorough review process that concluded with a two-round anonymous vote, the committee chose to keep all books while restricting two titles (Me and Earl and the Dying Girl and Crank) to high school libraries only. The determinations of the review are final.
As a reminder, all texts are supplemental, optional texts. Any parent-guardian who wishes to restrict books for their student can contact their school office or library to ensure their student does not have access to the specific book(s).
