You Only Use 10% of Your Brain
By: Ashley Bartlett, Taylor, Mia, & Christine
Origin
- Misunderstood information or interpretation about the brain
- Limited technology to study the brain so we could only see certain parts and made assumptions
- We use 10% of our brain when we are resting and doing nothing else
Variations of the Myth
- Only ten percent of the brain could be mapped by scientists, therefore only 10% of the brain is active
- There are only two parts of the brain: the conscious and subconscious mind
Why was this myth believable?
- Lack of technology
- Theories made by psychics in regards to physic powers
- Desire to use the brains full capacity
- Old reputable scientists such as Albert Einstein had supported the myth
The Truth
1. We use virtually all of our brain every day
2. The Brain's regions are not concurrently firing however continually active over a 24-hour period
3. Evidence would show over a day you use 100 percent of the brain
4. Even in sleep many areas of the brain are active
Disproving the Myth
- Current brain imaging technology such as PET scans (positron emission tomography) and fMRI (functional magnetic resonance imaging) show that the majority of the brain is active all the time
