EBOLA
by caleb, namita, and sarah
SYMPTOMS
symptoms of ebola include chills, dehydration, fatigue, fever, loss of appetite, sweating, and blood loss
CAUSES
ebola can be constrained from being in contact with another victim of ebola, or through other forms of contact
REPLICATION
Ebola Virus do not replicate through any kind of cell division; rather, they use a combination of host and virally encoded enzymes, alongside host cell structures, to produce multiple copies of viruses. These then self-assemble into viral macromolecular structures in the host cell. The virus completes a set of steps when infecting each individual cell.
step one- attachment
step two- viral entry (penetration)
a. Macropinocytosis
b. Clathrin-mediated endocytosis
step three- sequential transcription
step four- replication
step five- budding
step six- release
IMMUNE CELLS INVOLVED IN IMMUNE RESPONSE
Ebola kills immune cells which defend against infection but if a persons immune system can stand up to the initial infection studies say they are more likely to withstand the virus
TREATMENT
there is no current cure to the virus, but it can be tended to
providing iv and balancing electrolytes (body salts)
maintaining oxygen status and blood pressure
treating other infections if they occur
PREVENTION
practice careful hygiene
do not handle items that have come into contact with an infected person's blood and body fluids
avoid contact with bats and other nonhuman primates or blood, fluids, and raw meat prepared from these animals
after returning, monitor your health for 21 days and seek medical care immediately if you develop symptoms of ebola
