BGJHS Forensics Team Receives Horizons Team Trophy from Junior State Tournament
The BGJHS Forensics Team competed at the Kentucky High School Speech League (KHSSL) annual Junior State Speech Tournament at the University of Kentucky February 28-29. Students in grades 4-8 competed in twelve speech categories for State honors after advancing from seven Regional tournaments held around the Commonwealth in February. KHSSL, which is celebrating its 100th Anniversary this year after first sponsoring a statewide debate in 1921 with speech events added the year after.
Bowling Green Junior High brought home the Horizon Award for up-and-coming smaller teams. The team had 11 students competing in 25 events. 3 BGJHS students advanced to semifinal rounds. 8th grader Zoe Lebedinsky made semifinals in broadcasting, Humorous Interpretation, and Duo Improvisation, 7th grader Ben Pegues semifinaled in Prose and Duo Improvisation, and 7th grader Leela Kaul semifinaled in Declamation.
Students in the Junior State Speech tournament competed in three preliminary rounds Friday with the top eighteen in each event advancing to the State Semifinals Saturday morning. After another round of contests before panels of judges, six Finalists were named in each event. Those six Finalists competed again for a new panel of judges with state award winners named from the results of the Final round.
Several of the BGJHS students plan compete next at the UK Middle School Tournament of Champions in Lexington in May and at the National Speech and Debate Association’s Junior National Tournament in Albuquerque, NM in June.
The BGHS Speech & Debate Team will host a Speech & Debate summer camp July 20-24 for rising 6th-12th grade students in BG Schools. For more information, contact team coach, Janet Martin at janet.martin@bgreen.kyschools.us
