13 Amendment, freedom for slaves
Three months before the war ended in January 1865 congress created the 13th amendment, which stated that slavery was illegal. In December 1865 slavery was over for the U.S.
14th Amendment, equal protection
Even though the 13th Amendment was supposed to stop slavery people from the South still did not agree. So they needed a stronger amendment. So they made the14th Amendment in 1868 promising equal protection and due process. This also means that you would be a U.S. citizen if you were born in the U.S., even if you were black.
15 Amendment, African Americans can vote
In 1870 all men (not women) could vote. It did not matter what race you were or if you were a slave before.
