February is Black History Month where we take the time to focus on how the history of our nation and people have been shaped by the contributions of African-Americans. All social studies classes are incorporating activities that highlight these individuals and their achievements. Additionally, we highlight a significant African American contributor on our morning announcements each day.

Our next round of conferences are scheduled for Thursday, February 16th from 4-7 PM. Teachers will be available, first come first serve, in their classrooms to meet with parents and guardians to discuss their students' progress. The most successful students have parents or guardians and teachers who communicate and are on the same page. Please consider taking advantage of this opportunity. Our goal is to see as many parents and guardians as possible. We look forward to seeing everyone there!

State law requires districts and community schools to administer the state-funded ACT or SAT to all grade 11 students in the spring of the school year. Each year, districts and schools will select the test to administer to their juniors. Willoughby-Eastlake will continue to offer the ACT.

March 14th, all Juniors will take the ACT. Note: This is a date change from previous communications. They will report to their testing location at 7:45 AM. Testing will begin at 8:00 AM and conclude at 11:00 AM. Following testing, all Juniors will be given the opportunity to eat lunch 5th period.

Juniors in AM Excel TECC programs, and CCP students who have a CCP class during the testing window, will need to communicate to their program teacher or professors that they will be absent that day due to testing. Teachers and professors are aware of this. It happens every year.

College Credit Plus

The Willoughby-Eastlake City School District is pleased to offer our eligible students an opportunity to earn college and high school graduation credit by successfully completing college courses through College Credit Plus (CCP). Students may choose to take courses at a local college or a selective few courses at North. For more information and questions, please see your counselor.

All students that are interested in participating must fill out an Intent to Participate form. That form can be found on the North school page, website, and here. If you are unsure that if you want to participate, it is encouraged to do the form anyways. You are not locked into the program, but if you fail to fill it out by April 1st, you may be denied the opportunity.

Counselors will begin scheduling next week for the 2023-2024 school year. We will sit down and speak with students individually to create a graduation plan, credits earned, and graduation progress. Speak with your student about what classes they would like to take next year. Excel TECC applications have been completed and acceptance/waitlist letters have been emailed to all students that applied. If you did not receive a letter in your email, please log in the Excel TECC Enroll Track. You will see if you have been accepted or waitlisted. Boys & Girls Track: Our offseason lifting program is every Monday, Wednesday and Thursday in the weight room at North High School from 2:30 - 3:30pm, unless otherwise stated. There you will also find instructions on registering your child on Final Forms, which is a mandatory requirement of our district.

PARTICIPATION FEES for winter sports are past due and can be paid online on Final Forms or in the athletic office. If you need more time to make the payment, please contact the athletic office to make arrangements. All sports fees are $125. Any student athlete qualifying for reduced fees must pay their fee in the athletic office by cash or check. What an AMAZING night we had at our last big function for After Prom 2023! Game Show Night was a huge hit and put us right at our goal! Thank you so much to everyone who helped plan, donated items, gave their time and attended to support our kiddos!

End 68 Hours of Hunger is a public not-for-profit effort to confront the approximately 68 hours of hunger that some school children experience between the free lunch they receive at school on Friday afternoon and the free breakfast they receive at school on Monday morning.

If you know a student that may be struggling with food insecurity, please contact Mrs. Ungar in the guidance office at 440-975-3675 or robin.ungar@weschools.org. We can then determine if they qualify for a food bag to take home over each weekend. The program begins the week of October 17th.

Is your student struggling in a class or classes? Or, maybe needs a quiet place to work after school? If so, have them stay after on Wednesdays for Wednesday tutoring. It runs from 2:30-3:30. They can get help, meet new people, get caught up, work ahead, or simply get homework done. We meet in room 213. Bring some work, a snack, maybe even your earphones! See Ms. Schendel if you have any questions.

We are well into our one to one initiative, and as amazing as this new endeavor will be, there will be hiccups. What should students do if their device breaks? What if it just isn’t charged? We have options!

Chromebook Repairs

Students should report broken devices to Mrs. Bouplon in the library immediately. This should be happening in-between periods or at the beginning of a class period only. Hardware repairs only. Software repairs go to Mrs. Medic in room 134.

Students will be issued a loaner device until their original device is repaired. If a student is keeping a device overnight, they will receive a pass indicating so.

Chromebook Loaners

In the event that a student needs to use a device because theirs isn’t charged, they can check one out in the library. Ideally, students will come to school each day with a fully charged device, but things happen. We understand. Repeatedly coming to school without a charged device, or any device altogether will not be permitted.

Loaners must be returned by the end of 8th period, 2:20pm.

An electronic notice is generated and sent via email to both student and parent if a device is being kept overnight or if not returned on time.

All absences, late arrivals and early releases should be reported to the 24-hour attendance line at 440 283-2178. Please allow 30-40 minutes processing time due to high call volume at times. If you have an urgent attendance situation you may call the main office or attendance desk 440-283-2209. Otherwise, please be patient while we process calls. If your child is under the weather, they must go to the clinic. An early release will not be granted unless they leave through the school nurse.

Doctor’s Notes

If your child is absent due to illness or needs to leave due to a dental, medical or counseling appointment, they may turn in the provider's excuse to the attendance desk for an excused medical absence. These documents will prevent your child from being penalized for hours missed, as Ohio House Bill 410 requires us to track attendance hours. Should your child exceed the limit for hours, you will receive a letter, and we can no longer excuse your students' absence unless proper documentation is provided. Please Note - Drivers Education is not an excused absence.

Vacations and College Visits

All students needing time off for vacations or college visits should pick up a form to be signed by staff and guardians. Anything over five days must be approved by the student’s grade level administrator. Failure to report could result in an unexcused absence. These forms can be found in the main office.

Late Arrival

All students should enter the building through the main office upon arrival no matter the circumstance (Tech, CCP, class change, etc). They will be expected to sign in. No student should allow any student into the main doors. They must properly identify themselves at the attendance desk.

Early Release Process

Parents are not required to come in and sign their students in/out. However, we require a documented guardian to authorize the release from the building prior to departure.

Earlier in the summer the district communicated a change in how cell phones will be handled in the classroom going forward. Now that we are 1 to 1, the need for cell phones in the classroom has drastically decreased. Therefore, we are asking all students to keep their phones silenced and out of sight during class time. During study hall, lunch, or passing time, students will have free access to their phones. However, during academic times it is imperative that students comply with this request. Research has shown the negative effects that social media and cell phones in general have had on student attention spans. It’s time we helped them manage their screen time at school a little better. Please talk with your student about this change, and thank you in advance for your support.

Cardinal Credit Union is proud to announce our continued partnership with Willoughby-Eastlake North High School. To jump-start our second year returning to North, we hosted a Welcome Back Money Booth Event. The event was a huge success, every Cardinal Dollar collected in the Money Booth, was redeemed for cold hard cash and deposited into their Cardinal Checking or Savings Account.

Students are encouraged to visit our Student Branch every Tuesday during their lunch period.

They also have the opportunity to volunteer and work alongside the Branch Manager, Kim Rowan to help transact on accounts. We can accept deposits, process withdrawals/payments, assist in setting up online banking, remote deposit, and much more. Student Volunteer applications can be picked up at the student branch, and volunteer hour worksheets can be submitted.

Being present in the high schools, we hope to help students establish good financial habits and build a strong foundation. We want students to know that we are available to answer their financial questions and will help support them along the way. Did you know that Cardinal also promotes excellent academics? Every A that a student receives on their report card, through 12th grade, we deposit $1.00 into their Cardinal Account. Cardinal is here for you and your students.

School meals will no longer be free, unless your child is approved for free lunches. The federal government has eliminated the program that previously allowed all students to obtain meals at no cost. For the 2022-2023 school year, breakfast is $2.25 and lunch is $3.75. A la cart menu items can be purchased for additional cost. Cash will be accepted, but no change will be given at the register. Change will be credited to student accounts. You can add money to your student’s account at PaySchools Central. Information about PaySchools Central can be found HERE.

All meals include one main entrée and up to 3 total fruit and vegetable sides and a milk. Students may qualify for free or reduced priced meals. Please fill out a paper application and return it to your school or find the online application and instructions HERE.

At North, we have a program designed to promote positive behaviors. It is referred to as PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention and Support). Students are awarded Ranger Bucks when they demonstrate any of the traits we are focusing on – Respect, Responsibility, and Readiness to Learn. Students can turn in their Ranger Bucks at monthly Ranger Buck Stores, special events, and raffles throughout the year.

Last year we experienced an influx of students attempting to order food delivery services such as Uber Eats or Door Dash to the school. This is NOT PERMITTED. Food deliveries will not be accepted in the office, and any students attempting to open doors for delivery drivers will be suspended. This is a serious safety concern and consequences for violating this policy need to be severe. Parents wishing to drop off food for a special occasion may do so in the main office but we would encourage students to either purchase lunch in the student union or pack their own.

At North, we schedule our parent-teacher conferences at the halfway point of each quarter. The logic behind this is to provide students, parents, and teachers time to develop a plan to improve grades before they are finalized at the end of the quarter. Our conferences are always from 4-7PM and are drop in/first come, first serve. Our conference dates for this year are as follows:

You should become familiar with logging into two programs to help monitor your student’s academic progress. Schoology is our Learning Management System. Teachers post videos and assignments in Schoology. As a parent, you have the ability to access your child’s classes. You will need an access code to do so. PowerSchool is our Student Information Management System. This is where grades, attendance, and transcripts can be accessed. It is also where all emergency contacts and parent information is stored as well. If you need help gaining access to either of these programs, please call the main office for assistance.

Students in the Willoughby-Eastlake City Schools can anonymously report anything that could potentially be harmful or dangerous to any of our staff or students. Students can access the Safe Schools Helpline through the district website HERE. Students are encouraged to say something if they see or hear something. We are all in this together and need to take care of each other.
