TerraNichol Academy of the Arts
Kindergarten School Blog February 4th-8th, 2019
Our journey and wonder in learning labs this week.
Our mission is to embrace our students with a positive school family. Where they learn it is okay to take risks, make mistakes but also develop a respect for each other, themselves, and the world around them. They learn to take reasonable responsibility and accomplish goals set individually for them. Our intention is for each child to leave us feeling empowered, to have a true joy for adventure and learning new things, and confidence to try their best in all they do. We want them to show respect even in the face of frustration or disagreement and to be able to express their feelings, passions, likes and dislikes effectively to others.
Each month, each project, each story journey, each goal that we design and make is set with these intentions in mind. We share this with you as a way of expressing our feelings towards your child's educational career here at TerraNichol Academy and so that everyone can "see" the vision when creating the learning labs.
This week students embraced many new projects! Our outdoor learning labs are focused around a variety of math concepts on various levels of development and ability. Materials also allow for modification for each child when needed.
A, A, A, Andy Warhol Inspired the artists in the Art Studio this week! As students learned about these fascinating artists they experimented with vibrant colors highlighting areas of a self-portrait! See the Andy Warhol section below for more information about this artist!
We have also introduced Edgar Degas! Students will become familiar with ballet as they explore the works of Degas. They will learn to observe movement in art in Degas many paintings of ballerinas. The Story Degas and the Little Dancer takes students on Degas journey in creating his famous statue of the dancer.
The Flower Shop is open for business! Students explored making flower arrangements, pretending to be florists while some students were customers at our beautiful shop!
We call it a math attack! This week and next week students will be involved in a variety of math projects focusing on counting, one to one correspondence, number recognition, making and comparing sets, and making patterns! Students are learning math vocabulary such as greater than, less than, compare, and sort.
Kindergarten students have been developing number sense with a focus on number recognition. Using a variety of manipulatives to create addition problems and then making the connection with objects and numerals. Students have been writing many numbers developing correct form and also awareness of recognizing when they are written backward.
We have begun money provocation with interest in both dollars and coins. We will continue to recognize pennies and quarters and use pennies as a means of one to one correspondence also understanding their worth.
Next week students will be introduced to George Washington the first president and identify the money that he is on.
We continue to work towards established literacy goals.
Andy Warhol Pop Art!
Warhol liked to use bright colours and silk screening techniques to mass-produce artworks based on photographs of celebrities, like this famous image of Marilyn Monroe.
Screenprinting is a printing process that can create lots of artworks that look the same. The design is separated out into individual colours and the position of each colour is marked out by a stencil on a screen. The screen is a frame of wood with a fine mesh stretched over it. The different coloured inks are pushed through each stencil one at a time and the colours build up to form a picture. Sometimes Warhol would switch colours around and present a group of prints with contrasting colours together.
He didn't just do prints though, he made films, digital artwork, paintings and sculptures.
Warhol's studio was called The Factory, which was a reference to the mass-produced nature of his artworks. He saw art as a product, the same as the clothes you wear and the food you eat. He had a very particular personal style. He had a shock of white hair and was usually seen wearing a lot of black, leather jackets and glasses or sunglasses
He loved Los Angeles, beauty and plastic, things that were modern and changed quickly. If he was alive now, what do you think would inspire him?

Introduction to Degas Little Dancer!
Edgar Degas was a French artist born in Paris in 1834. He was supposed to become a lawyer, but he preferred to doodle so he became an artist instead! He mainly drew and painted pictures of everyday life such as this woman brushing her hair.Paris was a very exciting place to live if you were a young artist. Lots of artists travelled from all over the world to work there and Edgar Degas met a group of young artists called the impressionists. They wanted to paint scenes from everyday life, like food, people and the countryside. (At that time most art was about grander things such as history or Greek and Roman mythology). Peaches and almonds on a table might not seem too crazy but this was considered weird and exciting at the time!
The impressionists also painted a lot outside, 'en plein air' (which is French for 'in the open air'), to show different weather conditions and the effects of light in their paintings.
Although Degas is often described as an impressionist, he didn't really think he was one. He never painted 'en plein air', arguing that you need time in the studio to really perfect a painting. But he did draw and paint scenes of everyday life, and especially liked painting scenes of entertainers. He often made pictures from odd angles, like this drawing of Miss Lala, the circus acrobat. She is high up in the roof of the circus tent and is only holding on to the rope with her teeth. That's tricky!
He has drawn this picture using pastels, which are a bit like chalk. It looks as if he has quickly scribbled some of the drawing. This gives it a feeling of movement.
Degas is perhaps best known for painting ballet dancers. He was fascinated by them, and wanted to capture their grace and power. He often painted them backstage, getting ready for a performance.
This little bronze sculpture of a dancer is a copy of a wax figure Degas made in 1880. At this time Degas was starting to go blind, and he found it harder and harder to paint. So he began making sculptures. This sculpture is of a little girl who was a ballet student at the Paris Opéra. Her skirt is made of cloth. Her hair is made of bronze, but in the original sculpture she had real hair, tied back with a ribbon.
What do you think of Degas's artwork? Have you ever tried to draw a dancer? How would you use marks and scribbles to show someone moving?

2019 Annual Friendship Dance
The Annual Friendship TerraNichol Dance 2018.
The annual Friendship Dance began 13 years ago by 3 alumni students. The Friendship Dance became a TerraNichol tradition! The Friendship Dance is to honor the beautiful friendships formed at our school. Students are invited to dress their best on Thursday, February 14th. Many students wear hats, scarves, dresses, and dress pants and shirts. Remember it is a regular school day and clothes must be functional for a typical school day. Please refrain from dress shoes as this is a safety hazard. Dressing up is optional for students who choose to do so. We will be partner dancing to Motown and songs about Friendship. We will also have a friendship photo booth at the stage and our newly adding Kissing Booth in the rock room. We promise to take many photos throughout the dance!
Reminder: Students will make friendship letters in learning labs. Please no Valentine's cards are to come from home to school

2019 Enrollment
****Enrollment Packages for students went out in student's take-home folders this week. Please be sure that you received your packet and mark enrollment deadlines!
Enrollment for 2019-2020 School Year
Based on many inquiries to the school about new enrollment and new families already securing their space in the program for 2019-2020 school year we will be sending out re-enrollment for our existing students and siblings early in February. Typically we do this in March but because of the volume of interest for next year, we will need to evaluate space in the program for new incoming students. This will include our Kindergarten and First Grade program.
Re-enrollment forms and Registration Fee submitted by the deadline will guarantee the student's space for the upcoming school year. If forms and registration fee is not submitted by the deadline we will assume you are forfeiting your space.
