From the Principal

Dear FMS Families,

It's hard to believe that the school year is winding down. With the exception of a few hot days, we have been lucky with cooler end-of-year weather, as school buildings can get quite warm.

We enjoyed seeing many of you at open house a couple of weeks ago. It was so refreshing to welcome families back for a quick hello and tour of the building. We saw many proud children leading their families through their school!

Thank you to those who provided feedback to consider in our placement process. We have been working through our placement process, and students will meet their new teacher on Friday, June 10th during "Move-Up Day." We will welcome students from EES who will be starting 3rd grade, current 3rd and 4th graders will meet their new teachers in the building, and our 5th graders will walk across the parking lot to meet their new teaching teams at Essex Middle School. This is an exciting time, but we are all aware that transitions can be challenging and emotional. We are here as a school team for your children, and the support they receive at home is critical as well. Placement letters will be sent home in home folders at the end of next week as well.

The last week of school is full of celebrations and field trips. Each grade level will have a special, fun, community-building experience to remember.

Please remember to reach out at any time. You can expect a final edition of the Bobcat Bulletin during the last week of school, with some end-of-year details!

Tree Planting

FMS was the lucky recipient of an Arbor Day Grant and planted a Donald Wyman crabapple tree on May 17th. Thank you to the FMS student council, Town of Essex and the Conservation and Trails committee! Every student helped spread mulch after a special ceremony. Now we get to watch it grow!

Students voted on a name for our tree. The winning vote was for "The Welcome Tree."

Schoolwide Fun Day

We will be having an low-key FMS Fun Day on Tuesday, June 7th. We will start the day together with a Schoolwide Morning Meeting. We will do some fun outdoor activities during the day, mixed in with regular schedules, and finish the day with students cheering staff on during a staff relay!

School Safety

The tragic events in Uvalde, Texas last week have left schools across the country extremely upset and unsettled. As a staff, last week, we met to debrief the tragedy, connect, and also, importantly, review our school safety practices.

While you can review our school district safety policies here, below, please see some school-specific safety measures that have been and will continue to be in place:

  • All exterior doors are locked and closed at all times.
  • All classroom doors are locked at all times, and can be propped open with a magnet system that releases to close all doors in an emergency.
  • All staff wear photo ID badges at all times.
  • All visitors are buzzed into the building, and are required to sign in and out of the building.

We review safety drills with our students throughout the year. We have a school-based safety team that meets throughout the year to review safety protocols and share information with staff and students.

Please contact Sara Jablonski if you have questions about any of our school safety measures.

Schoolwide SEL: Words have POwer

Our most recent schoolwide SEL lessons focused on how the words we use have power and can impact others, in both positive and negative ways. We discussed how language can be hurtful and that we need to keep each other safe by the way we talk to each other. Part of this learning entailed each class developing a class commitment. We will be celebrating these class commitments during our Schoolwide Morning Meeting next week!
