Wanna Know Why AVID Helps Me?
Melonie Pham AVID-6th Grade 7
How did I grow as a student this semester?
I grew a lot as a student this semester and I have AVID to thank for that. AVID has helped me with a lot throughout this year so far. I have learned many strategies that have helped me. I think that with AVID I have been able to learn so much that will help me not just later on in life, but now as a seventh grader. As a student, I have worked hard all year to be able to maintain my 4.0 GPA, but AVID has only helped more as I continue throughout the year. Without AVID, I wouldn't have even known my GPA or get help when i needed it. AVID has helped a lot so far, but for me, I think this year has been great so far. School has been stressful, no doubt about it, but it wasn't the kind of stress that made you go under, it was the kind of stress that pushed me harder. I have worked hard and I have to admit to slacking off a little throughout this semester, but in the end, I pulled through. I did slack off a little during the school year so far but once i saw where the procrastination was taking me, I changed immediately. I have changed a lot through this semester, not just as a student, but also as a person. I came to James Coble as a shy, quiet girl, which i still am, but Coble changed me. It made me better, smarter, and more determined than ever.
Cornell notes have helped me a lot this semester. It made things easier to study and even easier to remember. Cornell notes are set up a way that makes it easier to study, we use this fold-over method as a way to test ourselves while studying. Cornell notes have also prepared me better for tests because while writing the notes, I can easily remember the information.
AVID tutorials are a lot different from regular tutorials. In AVID, the key to the tutorials, is understand the content and working as a group together to help each other out. Doing tutorials in AVID have helped me feel a little more confident around my peers. Also, tutorials have helped when it came to strategies, if I couldn't remember something, it was usually on someone else's TRF and it reminded me of what I needed to remember.
Learning about public-speaking has helped me by making me feel more confident when actually presenting. I have a shy personality but Coach Shaw taught us about all the elements needed to be known for a perfect presentation. Although I have not perfected presentations yet, AVID has helped me at getting better at it.
TRFs have helped me a lot this semester. They taught me that I can solve a problem by using the contents I have. I bring my TRF to tutorials every Tuesday and Thursday, but tutorials and TRFs are two different things to me. TRFs helped me because as I write down the content related to the problem, I begin to understand it more, I might not be able to solve it completely, but I understand it a lot more.
Some TRFs I have done this semester!
What will I do next semester to continue to grow in these areas?
I will continue to work hard next semester to keep my grades up and I will continue to grow as a student in the AVID program. Next semester, I will continue as student in the AVID program, learning new strategies and using old ones. AVID strategies have helped me so far, so I know that I will continue to grow throughout the rest of the year, as long as I push myself to be the best I can be.
