Beginning Semester 2
Happy New Year and welcome back to school! It was nice to reconnect with students and families even if it was only through virtual connections. As we begin the second semester, please take time to review best learning habits with your child. The principal/assistant principal announcement this week focused on good learning habits, but your support from home is also important.
Suggestions to help your child with virtual learning habits include:
- Reestablish a positive, distraction free learning space - attempt to removed distractions such as toys, food, and access to other devices such as TV or phone,
- Come to class on time - consider setting alarms on iPad for 5 minutes before class meetings,
- Be present during class meetings - video should be on with camera showing student's face,
- Consider access to headphones if other noise in the environment may be distracting.
We appreciate your support of the learning process at home. If there are ways we can help, please reach out to us! Thank you!
Counselor's Corner
Dear HPE families,
I wanted to remind you that as the school counselor, I can work with students in a variety of ways. During the 2020-2021 school year, the following services will be offered:
Small group counseling sessions, with parent permission, for students focusing on: divorce, grief, study skills, resiliency, friendship/social skills, and anger management. If you feel that your child needs assistance in any of these areas, please let me or your child's teacher know. New groups will be starting in January. Groups last for 6-8 weeks.
Individual meetings to help students with school related concerns or help with personal issues on an as needed basis.
Classroom guidance lessons with emphasis on personal/social skills, bullying prevention, conflict resolution, academic development (study skills), and career awareness.
Referral assistance to other programs and services in the community including our licensed mental health therapist, Mrs. Joyce.
If you have any questions regarding the counseling program, please contact me directly: rmagill@hse.k12.in.us. I'm looking forward to an amazing second semester!

HPE Library Curbside
Do you need more books to read and enjoy at home? Virtual learners can use HSE Curbside service to borrow books from the library.
All students will be able to place up to 4 books on hold weekly. Our new pick up hours are going to be Monday- Friday from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
There will be a book cart in the front vestibule. The curbside pick up book cart is organized alphabetically by last name. All book stacks will have a name tag to help you easily locate your books.
You can just walk in, grab your book stack, and go. No need to sign in or check in with the office. There will also be a book bin for you to return materials as you finish with them.
Books will be ready for pick up the day after you place your holds. So if you place your holds on Monday, they will be ready for pick up by 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday. Books will have a two week loan period.

Support Our Library
Birthday books with donor plates are also available. You can purchase at any time, even if your child's birthday has passed. Students love seeing their name and friends' names in books in the library.

For Kroger, login to your online account or create one using the Kroger Plus Card number you already have or get a new one. Then go to www.kroger.com/communityrewards and enroll in Community Rewards.
