Mountaineer News
Update brought to you by the Mountaineer team at MMS!
General Information
We hope everybody has been enjoying our Winter/Spring weather! It has definitely brought havoc to our students by bringing extra sniffles and sneezes. We would LOVE some extra tissues from anybody who can send some our way!
Also, the start of a new semester is a great time to update school supplies: pencils, glue sticks, folders, scissors, and even ear buds have disappeared due to lots of use since August.
Report cards are going home Monday due to the snow days. Please sign one copy and keep one for your records.

Class Happenings
Language Arts
We are excited to be entering into the third quarter. Students in English Language Arts are beginning to read Discovering Wes Moore by Wes Moore. In this novel, students will discover two young men who are products of single parent homes and low income environments take different routes in life. This is an exciting chance to explore world's outside of our own and discover relationships from our novel study.
Students will continue focusing on informational text and strengthening their reading comprehension skills through various reading strategies and intense reviewing.
Math
Tutoring: Thursday until 3:00
Pre-Algebra: College projects have been submitted! Please check with your child that they have submitted their links. It was due Friday and they will lose 5 points every day it is late. These will be graded and then they will have the chance to make corrections for their Gateway presentation during Learn, Create, Share in March.
We are now applying our graphing and equations to systems of equations and solving real world problems by graphing linear models and finding intersection points and/or solving the equations algebraically. We will be quizzing on Tuesday in most classes.
Math 1: The Big Business projects have been turned in. Please double check with your child that they did turn it in. Projects lose 5 points for each day late. They will be receiving these back and will take time to make corrections and will begin the process of creating a website for their "business" for their Gateway presentation during Learn, Create, Share in March.
We are also continuing our study of systems of equations and will move towards systems of linear inequalities and linear programming in the next few weeks.
Social Studies
Social Studies students have been busy exploring the Antebellum Period of American history. We have looked at slavery - both in the 1800s and today. We explored the industrial development of the U.S. Many of our activities this week have focused on comparing the South and North prior to the Civil War. Next week, we will delve deeper into the issues dividing our nation as we head towards the Civil War.

Science
We will be transitioning from Chemistry to Cellular/Micro Biology. In this quarter, we will cover cells, viruses, bacteria, fungus, and both infectious and noninfectious diseases. The students received their first vocabulary words for 3rd quarter. Most of these words are a review from last year (cell organelles). The first CFA (common formative assessment) of 3rd quarter will be Friday Feb. 5th. It will cover these vocabulary words as well as material taught this week and next week.
Just a reminder, I have a membership to Remind101. If you would like to join send a text to 81010. In the message type @mrdunag. It will send a message back with instructions on how to join. I will send texts out as reminders for upcoming quizzes, test and projects. Thank you for all you do helping your child with Science.
