February 2019
A word from Mr. Jerrell
We are officially half way through the school year. I have had a fantastic first year here at Bain. I have been impressed with the dedication of our staff, our kind, responsible, and respectful students, and the partnership with our families and community.
At the end of February, we will begin our Boosterthon fundraiser. The BoosterThon organization comes to our school and supports us through the fundraising process with exciting activities for our students and a culminating Fun Run on March 7th.
With the money raised from Boosterthon Fun Run, we plan to provide our staff with high quality professional development in reading strategies, writing activities, and math. We are committed to continually growing our practice based on the most up to date research.
Finally, we want to recognize two generous community partners. In January, the Mint Hill Women’s Club redesigned and redecorated our two teachers’ lounges. They decorated the walls, found some spatial solutions for our tables, and provided some extra condiments. Additionally, our partners at Forrest & Forrest Dentistry have generously donated coffee for the entire month of February for our staff.
As always, we appreciate the continued support of our families and community partners.
Michael Jerrell

Bain 20/20 Reading Challenge
Reading can be rewarding and we would love to make it a daily habit. Therefore, each month the library will make a reading log available for you and your child to fill out. At the end of the month, submit or return the reading log to your student’s homeroom teacher. Every child earns one raffle ticket for every month they turn in a log. Students will get the opportunity put the raffle tickets in to win extra prizes at the reading celebration at the end of the year. Students that turn in a reading log for every month during the program (January through May) will be entered to win an e-reader and/or a gift card.
Students in K-5 will be challenged to turn in one reading bookmark a month between the months of January 1st and April 30th. Each child will read at their own pace and record every day they read at least 20 minutes outside of the school day.
Students can be read to, they can listen to audio books, read books on their own, read magazines, graphic novels, read anything with words and even wordless books. The 20 minutes does not have to be read at one time. Students can break it up and read 5 minutes before school, 5 minutes after school etc… as long as it equals 20 minutes total for the day.
Fill out the monthly bookmark reading log and return it at the end of the month.
Important Information:
Paper reading logs will be distributed in Tuesday folders at the start of each month and as needed. You can also find a copy of the reading logs at https://drive.google.com/file/d/1qL87hhQmG7DMCQQycslZ7gbV5QfFPmfM/view?usp=sharing
Color or mark out each day your child reads 20 minutes or more outside of the school day on the bookmark log.
If your child has read for at least 20 minutes for at least 20 days and recorded them on his/her reading log, return the log to the Media Center at the end of that month for a reward on their next library day visit. Make sure your student’s name is on the log and a parent signature.
Turn in days will be on the first Friday of every month.
It is that easy! This is an optional program for your child to encourage a love for reading. At the end of the school year we will celebrate with a reading celebration and give out awards.
Have fun reading!
