Social Media Awareness
The “Momo Challenge,” a recently resurfaced social media “game”, is creating concern throughout New Jersey and the country, particularly since it is targeted to children and young adults. Lawrence intermediate School is encouraging parents to become aware of this social media phenomenon and monitor their children’s use of the internet and social media.
The “Momo Challenge” can be found on Facebook and/or through “WhatsApp” and more recently on YouTube Kids. It is quite disturbing. Momo is an avatar puppet who issues challenges to your children. The communications via the “Momo Challenge” begin with a chat that asks the receiver to perform small tasks and then escalate to more serious potentially violent acts, requesting photographs for proof.
Today, it was brought to my attention that there were some LIS students discussing Momo. Reactions ranged from frightened to curious and a number of students did seem to be familiar with the character.
I ask that you please have a conversation with your child to ensure there is no cause for concern.
The “Momo Challenge” is only one example of dangerous “games” available through social media that have a negative impact on students and their social interactions. Please feel free to contact the school or your child's counselor with any concerns regarding this topic or any other social media or internet concerns. You can learn more about the “Momo Challenge” by visiting some of the links below. Please be warned that some of the images and stories may be disturbing.

Health Office News
As you may or may not be aware, there is high influenza activity in NJ. LIS is seeing this as well as the stomach bug. We are taking every precaution to help prevent the spread of the flu within our school. We are working with our custodial staff to keep our students healthy and safe. Please assist us in keeping our students and staff healthy by keeping your child home if they are experiencing symptoms of the flu, vomiting or diarrhea. Students also must be fever free for 24 hours without fever reducing medication to be permitted to return to school.
If your child will be absent from school, please contact the school absence line by dialing 609-671-5530 prompt 5. With the cooler weather upon us please remember to send the proper outdoor wear for your children as we will go outside for recess each day. If your child borrows clothes from the health office, please wash and return them. Any questions? Please call the nurses office at 671-5533
