Weekly Academics
Reading Street:
•Question of the Week; “How is life different today from hundreds of years ago?”
•Amazing words: solider, celebration, barn, arch, blacksmith and sprinted
•We recognized and named uppercase and lowercase letter: Dd, Kk, Rr, Ii, Mm, Cc, Pp, Tt, Ss, Bb. Nn and Aa
•Identified initial and final sounds within various words
•Initial /d/ and /k/ sort
•High- frequency words: I, am, the, little, to, a, have, is, we, like, me, he, for, me, she, with, see and look
•Historical Fiction
•Cause and effect
•Verbs for the past and future/ verbs that add -s
•Used our “rubber bands” to help sound out CVC words like kite and dip
•Some of our favorite books that we read are George Washington Visits, Chinese New Year, Brownie Groundhog, Hunter’s Best Friend at School and the Wintry Surprise
Handwriting:
•Reviewed headline, midline and baseline
•Practiced writing uppercase and lowercase letters Dd, Kk, Rr, Ii, Mm, Cc, Pp, Tt, Ss, Bb. Nn and Aa
•Helpful strategies when writing (finger spacing, capital letters, punctuation)
•We began drafting our stories this week using our Inspiration Boards. The students are so excited to write their own books.
enVision Math:
•Addition and subtraction
•Students are working toward identifying whether a math story is addition or subtraction
•Stories to show ways to make 4 through 10 (patterns)
Social Studies/Science:
•Shadows
•President’s Day / Valentine's Day / Chinese New Year
SEL: We continue to sit as a class and place ourselves somewhere on the Mood Meter. We continue to encourage the students to use “Kelso’s Problem Solving Strategies” to solve problems.
The kids are so exited about Raz-kids! They love telling me that they went on it at home. Thank you for allowing your child the opportunity to use this program at home!
Reminders and Events
If you have not done so already, please send your child in with his/her Valentine’s Day box and cards. We will be handing out our Valentine’s Day cards next week.
-The 100th day is February 10th
-No school February 15th to 19th
-Field Day for the 2nd floor is June 17th. This is when your child will “graduate” and receive his/her certificate. Please mark your calendars so your child has a family member present!
