From our Principal

Dear Thornhill Community,

I want you to know that I appreciate all the hard work you are all doing to support your kids under these difficult times. This has been hard on everyone and I hope you are looking forward to the Winter Recess!

Our staff is working rigorously to engage and teach in this new paradigm. A huge part of Thornhill is being in this community and we certainly miss our sing alongs and assemblies. Next week we will have 2 Winter Assemblies for our kids to have an opportunity to see each other and participate in some "fun" before Winter Recess.

TK-2nd: Wednesday, December 16th from 9:30-10am with Pope

3rd-5th: Friday, December 18th from 9:30-10am with Ms. Green

We hope to see you all there - students and families welcome! Zoom information will come via Konstella the day before each assembly.

Also, please be sure to fill out the OUSD Fall 2020 Family Feedback Survey that was sent out today via Konstella. The deadline is Tuesday, December 15. Thank you to the 182 parents that filled it out!

Lastly, we are having our final PFC meeting of the year this Monday, December 14 at 5:30pm. This is a great place to meet fellow parents/guardians and be involved in our school.

Wishing you a restful, peaceful and wonderful Winter Recess.

Mr. Daubenspeck

Thornhill Auction - Brainstorm Meeting!

It's time to start thinking about and planning the 2021 Annual (Virtual) Auction!

The 2021 Auction Committee needs your creative ideas. This fundraiser is normally our biggest fundraiser of the year and supports many of our kids’ programs and services, so we’re asking for your help to brainstorm fundraising ideas that could work in our COVID environment. That’s right - we only need you for an hour to help generate fun ideas. All are very welcome and invited! New families too!

The meeting will be one hour Wednesday evening, tomorrow, December 9, from 7-8 pm. Information and RSVP on Konstella.

Big Thunderbird Wins at Thornhill Family Trivia Night!

Thornhill’s first annual family trivia game was a huge success! New and veteran Thornhill families joined on Saturday evening over Zoom to compete on questions ranging from pop culture to children’s literature to Thornhill lore. Congratulations to our champions: The McQuade/Nagy family, the Clearys, the Espinozas, the Urbanos, and the Olofsens. They received baskets of holiday treats sponsored by the Thornhill Dads Club.

Due to your incredible generosity, we raised $2755 for this event, which more than covered the cost of Fun Team Events. THANK YOU!!! The extra will go directly to the salaries of our PFC-funded staff employees. We hope to do this again!

‘Tis The Season: Send Holiday Cards with Minted or Shutterfly

As you prepare to find that perfect family photo (editor’s note: less than perfect seems more appropriate for 2020) to showcase in your holiday cards this year, Minted has you covered with a 20% discount on your entire order AND 15% of your purchase goes back to fund Thornhill PFC initiatives. It’s a win-win!

Visit & enter promo code: FUNDRAISETHORNHILL

Shutterfly & Tinyprints offer 8% back on any purchases made through our Thornhill PFC Storefront. This deal is year-round — start your order for holiday gifts and keep it in mind for your future photo needs.

Thornhill Annual Fund Update

Fundraising at Thornhill is a year round sport! So far this school year, 38% of our 305 families have contributed to the Thornhill Annual Fund, to raise $138,962. Your donations are essential, as they go directly to funding PE, Librarian, four teachers’ aides, our social worker, African dance, and gardening for our student community. Forgot to donate? We still need you! Find all the info here. Thank you Thunderbirds!

Thornhill Virtual Tours

Do you have friends or neighbors interested in Thornhill for TK, kindergarten, or even a later grade? We’re offering virtual tours! During this tour, they’ll meet our principal, the TK and Kinder teachers, and a few current Thornhill families. We have 2 tour dates:

  • Wednesday, December 9 from 6-7pm — tomorrow night!

  • Thursday, January 14, 2021 from 6-7pm

Please share this registration link, and about 24-48 hours before the tour, we will email all registrants the Zoom link.

Oakland Virtual Schools Tours

If you have an older Thunderbird and are looking to take a virtual tour of an Oakland middle or high school, OUSD is tracking virtual tours here. If you are a parent of a 5th grader, we have posted Oakland middle school virtual tours in the 5th Grade Families Konstella group.

The application window for the 2021-22 school year opened on November 16, 2020 and will close on February 5, 2021. Note this window is only if you are applying to a new school at any grade. Info will come in late spring about staying at Thornhill.

Individual Class Printed Packets

If your teacher tells you that printed materials need to be picked up, they will continue to be in the same spot — on the fence near the TK trailer and the Alhambra entrance.

About the Thornhill Newsletter

The Thornhill Parent-Faculty Club (PFC) eNews team publishes this weekly newsletter each Tuesday in the school year to communicate school, PFC and OUSD news, events and information.

Email submissions to our Newsletter Chair, Jill Evans, at by 8 p.m. Thursday for approval—nothing sent after this will be included in the following week’s newsletter unless there are extremely compelling extenuating circumstances. It’s fine to include text in the body of the email with links and no formatting, and attach photos preferably as 150 x 150, 72 dpi JPG or GIFs only (not embedded in email or Word file). Submissions may be edited for spelling, grammar, brevity and clarity. Advertising and items not related to Thornhill are not accepted, as we need to keep the newsletter focused on need-to-know info for the community.

THANK YOU to everyone who submits articles and to PFC Board Members, Teachers, VPs of Communications Erin Proudfoot & Evie Nagy, PFC Presidents Rex Crum & Alicia Streight, and Principal Steve Daubenspeck. Member of Oakland Unified School District (OUSD).
