Nichibei 日米 Health Care Fellowship

VIA is seeking a medical programs alum to serve as the Nichibei [日米] Health Care Fellow for our 2016 Exploring Health Care (EHC) and Culture and Medical Exploration (CME) Programs! We are looking for someone who is able to contribute unique perspectives and insights which will complement that of our Bay Area-based Global Health Fellows.
The Nichibei [日米] Health Care Fellowship was established to provide VIA medical programs with an opportunity to further develop their English and leadership skills through program organizing and facilitation while deepening their own understanding of U.S. and Japanese health care. As a key staff member, the Fellow helps to support participants in critically examining aspects of the U.S. and Japanese health care systems. In addition, the Fellow advances the promotion of VIA's medical programs in Japan while strengthening the community before, during and after the programming.
The ideal candidate has some clinical experience and is able to use their own clinical knowledge to draw comparisons between health care in the U.S. and Japan. He or she demonstrates solid leadership and organizational skills, is proactive, and able to work independently as well as on a team. A willingness to promote the use of English during the program is essential, as is the ability to discuss complex issues in English.
RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES
Pre-Program
- Support EHC and CME recruitment in Japan, including distributing flyers, posters, sending emails to potential participants, and talking to students in classes and clubs
- Attend planning meetings with VIA program directors
- Collaborate with VIA staff to organize participants' pre-departure orientation
Program
- Work with team to ensure smooth facilitation of daily program activities, including organization visits, workshops, guest speakers, and facilitation of reflection sessions
- Attend program planning meetings and help with scheduling, etc.
- Present on an important contemporary medical issue or other topic related to health care in Japan or the U.S.
Post-Program
- Participate in EHC and CME programs review with staff
- Help coordinate post-program event in home region
- Assist in training for 2017 Nichibei [日米] Health Care Fellow
