Super Saturday Classes

What's New in the Workshop Classes?

Grade 1

First graders are using cameras and drawings to track changes. We explored the school environment in the late summer and fall, and took pictures both times. We made butter, and learned how plants get nutrients with celery. More experiments to come in 2017!

Grade 2

We've been researching life for the Native peoples of Ohio and comparing that with how we live today. We made a model village, complete with bows and arrows and canoes. Students are sewing their moccasins over winter break.

A special thanks to Mrs. Payne, Mrs. Ashcraft, and Mrs. Sheets for helping us put on the finishing touches before the presentation at Fine Arts Night. Look for more about early Ohio in the spring.

Grades 3 through 6

Our fall project was the study of a Person from the Past, a Cincinnati citizen in 1819. Using the Cincinnati City Directory of 1819, students explored locations and occupations to create a presentation to be shared in the spring.

Next they made a timeline about an occupation or invention.

In the spring we'll go to downtown Cincinnati to see the actual spots from 1819 as they look today.

This winter, third and fourth graders will create inventions for the Toshiba Exploravision Competition. Grades 5 and 6 will learn about immigration and American History from 1900 to 1950.

The slide below was created by Alyssa Greco, Grade 6, as part of her presentation.

Lots of Drama with Project 38: 2016-17

Our play this year is William Shakespeare's "Antony and Cleopatra", and we're lucky to work again with Cincinnati Shakespeare Company's Tess Talbot. Thirty sixth-graders are participating with Mrs. Tisue and Mrs. Hader, during our Enrichment time. We've been getting into the world of Shakespeare with Readers' Theatre readings of "Hamlet" and "A Midsummer Night's Dream".

Over winter break they'll read a version of the play and start planning a multimedia performance.

Pre Algebra

The 13 students in this group are acclerated 6th graders who will take a math placement test when they enter junior high. Starting in January we'll be joined by a Cheviot student using the blended learning technology. They'll compete in the Stock Market Game in the spring and learned about ratios and proportions by making the "world's best" chocolate milk.

Enrichment Groups begin

Grades 1, 2, and 3 have math enrichment groups meeting weekly to do challenging work and special projects. Third graders will participate in the Design LAB (Learn And Build) project with our mentor Mark Kroth, of SSRG. Our topic this year is "Bridge".

Brain Bowl

Our team of 4th-6th grades has been learning and practicing. We'll be ready to play in January. Practices are on Tuesdays from 2:15 to 3:45, and matches are on Thursdays beginning at 4:15 p.m. Our schedule is subject to change so please watch for updates and be sure we have your best email info.
