Contraction

The illness comes from eating food or drinking water that has been contaminated with human feces. It usually takes several days to become infectious, so it usually does not spread from person to person.

Symptoms

  • watery diarrhea
  • loss of appetite
  • weight loss
  • stomach cramps
  • nausea
  • body aches


If untreated, this disease can cause frequent, sometimes explosive bowel movements that can last up to 57 days.

Treatment

The recommended treatment is the consumption of two antibiotics that shorten the duration of the illness significantly. People who have diarrhea should rest and drink a lot of water.
