Adverse Childhood Experiences & Assets: Conference on Nov. 13th
Childhood experiences, both positive and negative, have a tremendous impact on lifelong health and opportunity. As such, early experiences are an important public health issue. ACEs are Adverse Childhood Experiences. The more ACEs a child has, the higher the probability that the child will be involved in behaviors such as substance abuse, school dropout, delinquency or violence. The wide-ranging health and social consequences of ACEs underscore the importance of preventing them before they happen. Just as many ACEs will work against a child, many assets will help them. The 40 Developmental AssetsĀ® framework was created by Search Institute and consists of preventative measures, positive experiences, and qualities that young people need to grow up healthy, caring and responsible. These assets are protective factors and have been consistently shown, by research, to buffer youth from risk. The more assets a child has, the higher probability that child will not be involved in behaviors such as substance abuse, school dropout, delinquency or violence. In our communities, we have the opportunity to combat the negatives of ACEs with the hope and support found in building assets.
