MSE Mendenhall January Newsletter
Happy New Year MSE Family!
From the Desk of the Principal
Happy New Year to all of our MSE families!
I would like to thank all of the parents and teachers who volunteered with many of the holiday events such as the Coat Drive, Food Drive, etc. we had going on at school during December. We are lucky to have such wonderful parents and staff members.
We will be mailing the semester 1 report cards along with the re-enrollment form tomorrow. Due to limited space for the upcoming year, we ask each parent/guardian to fill out this form (the re-enrollment form) completely. This form is designed for currently enrolled students to update their information, and determine whether they are returning for the 2020-2021 academic year. The closing date for this form is Friday, February 21, 2020, at 4:00 pm. Forms received unsigned, incomplete, or after the closing date will affect enrollment status for the next year.
Also, I would like to inform you that the new construction at our building to add new classrooms, a gym and cafeteria is moving very quicly and is almost finished.
Thank you for your support in Memphis School of Excellence.

K-7 Principal
Lead Testing Results
Under the State of Tennessee protocol listed in PUBLIC CHAPTER NO. 977, Tennessee Code Annotated, Title 49 Chapter 2, Part 1 as amended; the statute details steps for the collection of water samples for each operating consumable, i.e., drinking water source in a school building. All samples are to be analyzed for total lead content.
The goal of this testing is to determine if drinking water in this school is below an action level of 15 parts per billion of total lead at all consumable water sources.
We had both campuses tested this fall, and the results show that all water sources tested are below the action level (15 parts per billion).Water sources tested included kitchen sinks, drinking fountains, and ice makers. There are no water sources that contain high amounts of lead.
We will test all water sources again in two years as SCS requires.
Re-enrollment and Cordova Campus Updates
We are also going to begin taking applications for MSE Cordova shortly. Stay posted for more information!
MSE Mendenhall Art Show
The hallways were lined with carefully hung art pieces, drawn by each and every student at MSE Mendenhall. Our drama team performed a play, and we had special musical performances by 3rd and 5th grade.
Our Art Show was a moment to pause, and take in the beauty that our students create. Thank you to everyone who organized, contributed, and enjoyed!
MSEWinter Care Packages
Dear MSE Family,
The Office of Senator Katrina Robinson, Administration, and K-7 Student Council coordinated with the K-7 Counseling Department to create winter care packages for our students. We built bags that contained warm clothing, as well as other essentials.
The chill of those cold winter weeks is upon us, and we want to ensure that everyone has exactly what they need!
Thank you and Have a Wonderful Winter,
The Counseling Dept.
Spelling Bee
Zaniah will take the University of Memphis's online qualification test in January to determine whether she will compete at the Shelby County spelling bee later in the spring. We are very proud of her and all of the other students who studied and worked hard in this academic competition!
From the Academic Coordinator
Beginning on January 7th, students in all grades will take the NWEA MAP Growth screener in reading, language and math. This is a nationally-normed assessment that gives us an idea of how our students are performing compared to their peers across the country. Teachers are then able to use the data to design instruction that best meets the needs of our scholars. If your student has been with us since the beginning of the year, this round of testing will also allow us to see how much he or she has grown since the fall administration. Be on the lookout for a report with your student's scores - teachers will send them home once the testing window is complete.
Additionally, we hope you will join us on Thursday, January 16th for our Quarter 2 Honors Ceremony. We will celebrate students for their academic success in the second nine weeks by recognizing those who have achieved perfect attendance, honor roll, principal's list, highest benchmark score, and student of the month. Please see our website for more information!

Robotics- Congrats!
Robotics Team Championship Qualification
The robotics team designed a hypothetical technology that would harness electricity from parks and playgrounds, and then use this energy to power charging stations around the parks. At the competition, the team had to defend and explain their invention. We are so proud of all the hard work our students and their coach, Mr. Koken, have put towards their invention.
Come out and support the robotics team on January 25th, 2020!
