Building Readers...
Our goal this year is to plant the love of reading into our kids. Dr. Seuss reminds us, “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go.” We want our kids to take journeys to places they have never been through reading and discover the joy that reading will bring. We will focus on reading during our enrichment class, c30. All content teachers will be utilizing children’s books to teach. We will encourage students to read in their free time. We want to make reading fun and will be utilizing AR (Accelerated Reader) as a tool to build excitement with reading. The campus will have a variety of contests throughout the year. We need your partnership in making this successful. READING is the ONLY homework they will have this year. MRI students will be asked to read nightly for 20 minutes.
Our core values are introduced through a book.
Reading in math class.
Students check out their first books this week.
Building LEADERS...
Our goal this year is to continue to build and enhance leadership skills in our MRI cardinals. We have several fun activities planned to incorporate leadership skills into our daily lives.
Monthly Theme
Each month we will focus as a school on a leadership theme. We will learn about and practice the theme during the month. The theme will be introduced on the first Friday of the month at the Leader & Reader Rally. The students will expand on it in their home room through a read aloud and activity that will be shared on the class's bulletin board. September's theme is School Pride and Citizenship.
Leader & Reader Rally
At our rally, we will introduce our leadership theme for the month, have a leader from the community speak, and celebrate the successes of our kids and school for that month. We will meet as a school on the first Friday of each month.
Leader Fridays
Mr. Gustaveson and Mrs. Brand will meet with each class on Fridays during c30 to build leadership skills.
1st Friday of Month: Leader and Reader Rally, Class Activity in Homeroom
2nd Friday: Visit from counselor/administration, class activity
3rd Friday: Work on class activity
4th Friday:Leadership Store/Celebration
Leadership Council
Every 9 weeks, homeroom teachers will select a student to be their classroom's leader council representative. They will meet with Mrs. Hayes to collaborate on ways to make MRI and our community a better place. They will help with fundraising for our Leadership store, lead food/coat drives, participate in service projects, and help create our “How to MRI” episodes.
Cardinal Credits/Leadership Store
MRI Pledge
We recite our MRI Pledge every morning. We will use it as a guide to unify our campus on our journey to success.
I WILL ACT MY BEST!
I WILL DO MY BEST!
I WILL BE MY BEST!
WE ARE MRI!

Opportunities for Success
We believe grades that are recorded should reflect student mastery of the concept. We know that it takes students different amounts of repetitions and exposures to master a concept. All students have the opportunity to correct any graded assignment that is below a 70 with constructive response for a grade up to 70. (more info to come from your teacher) Corrections will be done at home, if your child chooses to correct their assignment.
Our 5th grade math team would like to provide their mathematicians with prior knowledge before coming to class. They use edmodo to show a short (5 minute) video to prepare students for their class learning the next day. We ask that these videos be watched at home. The videos can also be used as a resource that students and parents can refer back to throughout the year.
Cardinal Corner is open Tuesday-Friday mornings at 7:15 to assist students. This is a time where students can do their reading homework, watch the 5th grade math video, make corrections, take AR tests, or practice on I-Station.
Grandparents' Day at MRI
Students with the last name A-L will have their visitors come on Thursday
and M-Z on Friday. If there is a conflict in their schedule, they can switch days.
We will line chairs around the multi-purpose gym for our visitors to sit in while waiting for their grandchild. Students will walk to the cafeteria through the back gym doors. Students will pick up their grandparents to get their food. All grandparents and their students will eat at special tables set up in the gym.
We will alter our lunch schedule to allow time between the lunches on both days:
4th grade: 10:45-11:15
5th grade: 11:30-12:00
Please return your RSVP by Friday, Sept. 2nd, so we can prepare for this special day.
