I BELIEVE You Matter!!
I Believe in Being a Top 20
As Top 20s, we encourage those around us to be the best they can be, to see the best within themselves. We've combined our efforts this year to model for and impress upon our students what being a Top 20 means in our daily lives. As we look ahead to spring, its assessments, field trips, experiences, celebrations, and culminations, continue to lead our students in all things Top 20. Remember the basics that began last fall on the first day of school with believing in you matter, believing in relationships, in helping others be successful, in living above the line, in keeping our day, in seeing the problem, owning the problem and honoring the absent. We've dedicated ourselves to inspiring our students each of the 139 days of school this year. In the remaining 33 days, we are not here to sail into the sunset, but to enable our students to take the helm and chart their own course. As you've seen in the video, the time is approaching for our students to get the chance to really test the cut of their sails and show what they're made of. Continue to encourage them to be not afraid, to focus on their target and believe in themselves and they simply can't miss. I believe in you. Do you?
To all those who contributed to the food drive, thank you!! The table in the entrance is overflowing, evidence of the efforts of Richmond Elementary to reach out and meet the needs within our community. Thank you for making a difference today to create a better tomorrow!

Reading is Our Super Power!
We continue our efforts to meet our World's Best Workforce reading goals, reviewing the article written by Mary Stow,
Teaching Morphology: Enhancing Vocabulary Development and Reading Comprehension. Stowe reviews two critical Pillars of Literacy, decoding and vocabulary development, and identifies morphology as a strong indicator and positive influence in reading comprehension. What is morphology? Morphology is the segmenting of words into prefixes and affixes and roots (or base words.) Connecting words through meaning and spelling aid in the development and expansion of student vocabulary. Understanding the meaning of common Latin and Greek prefixes, suffixes, and roots allows the transfer of that meaning to unfamiliar words. Stowe states "In order to break a word down into morphemes, students must complete the following four steps:
- Recognize that they do not know the word.
- Analyze the word for recognizable morphemes, both in the roots and suffixes.
- Think of a possible meaning based upon the parts of the word.
- Check the meaning of the word against the context of the reading."
Authors also provide links to foldables and matching games to assist in morphemic instructional strategies. Enjoy!
