Principal's Message
November is here and I want to say, “Happy Thanksgiving.” Please take a minute to truly examine that phrase. I am so grateful and thankful that you allow the Clark-Shaw faculty to teach and prepare your children for the future. Let us be appreciative that we have kids who want to learn, be successful, and grow academically. Let us be appreciative that we have a faculty dedicated to helping our students reach those pivotal milestones. I am thankful for wonderful parents who support education and work diligently with us every step of the way. As you sit with your immediate family this Thanksgiving, know that your child has a support system here at school too. We are thankful that you chose Clark-Shaw for your child’s education. We are always here to assist you.
“Some days are better than others, but every day can be the best day of your life by giving thanks.” Richie Norton

First Application Window Closes Nov. 7th!
Do you know an upcoming 6th, 7th or 8th grader who would excel at Clark-Shaw Magnet School? Help us spread the word about our school and encourage parents and families to choose Clark-Shaw for next year. The magnet school application process is in full swing, and the first window which is currently open will close on November 7th. There will be another application window and lottery later in the year, but encourage those you know who are considering Clark-Shaw to apply for magnet school early! Farewell and Good Luck!
Miranda Manley is being promoted after 23 years in the 6th grade! She has taught social studies at Palmer Pillans, Burns, and Clark-Shaw Magnet School of Math and Science. Mrs. Manley has earned a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education, a Master of Education in Special Education, and an Instructional Leadership Certificate from the University of South Alabama. She has been recognized as Mobile County Secondary Teacher of the Year and was a district finalist for Alabama Teacher of the Year. Mrs. Manley led Clark-Shaw to become a Bicentennial School of Excellence.
Mrs. Manley is very excited about her new journey as the assistant principal of Augusta Evans Special School. When asked about leaving Clark-Shaw Magnet school, Mrs. Manley said, “The thing I will miss the most about Clark-Shaw is the students. Clark students have an insatiable desire for knowledge. Combining that desire for learning with the support of faculty, families, and the community, makes Clark one of the greatest places to learn and teach! I will forever be grateful for my time at Clark and will cherish the memories.” She wants all her students to know she loves you and she’ll be rooting for you. She knows you will continue to make her proud!
Best of luck to Mrs. Manley as she takes on this new challenge! We will be rooting for you, too!

Student Attendance at Games
Students are required to remain in uniform if you stay after school for athletic events. You cannot change clothes for safety and security reasons. Your school uniforms help us easily identify our CSMS students for supervision purposes and in case an emergency arises. However, if you are attending with a parent, this rule does not apply.
All students should be picked up promptly after each event or you will lose your attendance privileges.

#Engaged Learning @ Clark-Shaw:
Mrs. May's 8th grade science students are intently studying these eggs! Egg shells are insoluble in water; therefore, the students are using vinegar to dissolve the egg shells made of calcium carbonate. Eggs have a semi-permeable membrane under the shell. The students later put the eggs in different solutions with different concentrations of sugar to see what would happen.
(above) Mrs. Fuller’s 6th grade science students recently used Playdoh, magnets, paper clips, and a compass to model Earth's magnetic field.
(above) Mrs. Kirksey's 6th grade science classes have been learning about the layers of the earth's crust by digging into eggs, as well as demonstrating how transform, divergent, and convergent boundaries work using cake icing, gram crackers, and rice cakes.
(above) Mrs. Steiner's 6th grade language arts students rotated between hallway stations in which they read and analyzed passages to identify the author's purpose and perspective.
(above) The 8th grade world history classes of Mrs. Howell and Mr. Roberts recently visited the Archeology Museum at the University of South Alabama as part of their unit on "Uncovering the Past." Students did activities in which they inferred facts from various artifacts.
The 8th grade classes were also given a tour of campus including the Bell Tower.
(above) Physical science classes in the 8th grade have been investigating the reaction between distilled water and calcium chloride. After determining whether it was an endothermic or exothermic reaction, the students collaborated online to share and discuss data.
(above) Our media specialist, Mrs. Morris, demonstrates to 6th grade students a rotary telephone, one of many "artifacts" she has on display in the library that many of our students may never have seen in use.

Notes from our Nurse
As you probably know already, flu season is upon us. To prevent widespread flu cases in our school, please use the following guidelines to determine whether or not to send your child to school:
DEFINITELY KEEP YOUR CHILD HOME IF HE/SHE HAS ANY OF THESE SYMPTOMS:
- Fever of 100 degrees or greater (student may return to school ONLY AFTER his/her temperature has been below 100 degrees for 24 hours WITHOUT THE USE OF FEVER REDUCING MEDICATIONS)
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Chills
- General malaise or feelings of fatigue, weakness or body aches
Consult your child’s physician for possible evaluation if any of the above symptoms last more than 24 hours.
The best defense for fighting any type of illness is practicing and reinforcing the following good hygiene habits both at home and at school:
- Frequent handwashing
- Keep hands away from eyes, nose, and mouth as much as possible.
- Cover mouth and nose when sneezing and coughing. Wash hands or use sanitizer after.
- Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
- Stay home if you or your child are sick
