August News
From Kenneth J. Tice Elementary
Principal's Points!
Welcome Back!
I am excited to welcome everyone back to school on Wednesday, August 23rd! For those of you who are new to our school, I want you to know that you are coming to an absolutely wonderful place. Our teachers and staff are passionate, caring, hardworking, and always learning something new for the benefit of your children. We are a collaborative and driven group of people who take learning seriously while also making personal connections that help children succeed.
At Tice, we believe that building strong relationships between home and school is a key factor in increasing student achievement. We must work together in an extended family environment for the success of ALL of our students. We believe it is everyone’s responsibility to empower children with the creative, intellectual, and decision-making skills necessary for them to become academically, socially, physically, and emotionally successful and responsible.
With that in mind, you are invited to be an active participant at Tice Elementary. Whether you are a classroom volunteer, a member of the PTA, special event participation, or a member of one of our school communities, you are encouraged to be involved! Each month I will be sending out a monthly full of celebrations, updates, and opportunities to continue building a strong school-community partnership.
We are going to have an amazing school year together, where our staff and students exceed your expectations. The 2017-2018 theme is Mardi Gras and we are ready to "unmask the possibilities" at Tice Elementary.
As principal, my door is always open and I welcome your input.
In Partnership,
Aronda L. Green
Meet our Assistant Principal Mr. Steven Gonzales!
Assistant Principal's Welcome
Dear Parents/Guardians and Students,
I come to Tice Elementary as a life-long learner with 17 years of domestic and international teaching and leadership experience. My goals are to reach every student in hopes that we are all successful and share an abundance of growth over time. I have the good fortune of working in a school community where our students are our children and no job is too big or too small when it comes to their success. I look forward to working with each of you to ensure we provide the best learning environment for our students.
Sincerely,
Steve Gonzales

Tice Readers are Getting back into the groove of things…
It’s a new school year and we are ready to “Let the Good Times Roll!” As we put our best foot forward, we will begin to step into reading comprehension, fluency, word solving, and a love for reading in a supportive loving environment using text at an independent level. Some tips to help your child achieve their academic goals this school year in these areas, are listed below.
Comprehension
Ask questions that invite recall AND thinking, such as, “Why do you think __ happened?” or “What do you think __ means?” Urge re- reading to build comprehension as needed.
Fluency
Model expressive reading & have your child echo read. Encourage just-right pacing (not too fast, not too slow). Demonstrate how to attend to the punctuation (pausing at the end of sentences, adding expression based on the punctuation mark).
Word-Solving
When an error is made WAIT to give your child a chance to work on it independently. When you are certain they are going to keep going, stop them saying something like, “Try that again,” or “Make it match.”
The most growth is made with consistency at home and at school. We always appreciate all parent support in growing our readers. So lets get on the “reading float” and develop a great “ Tice Reading Krewe!”
