AMCMS Principal's Office
What is going on in the Principal's Office?
My Challenge to You
Why is it important for you to spiral content you have previously taught back in to your classroom activities?
Think about that question as you watch the video below that is less than 2 minutes long.
Have you ever hear of the Ebbinghaus Forgetting Curve? If you have attended any AVID training, there is a good chance you have learned about Ebbinghaus and his forgetting curve but... you may have forgotten about it. That's understandable given what we see on the curve below and how soon students forget what they just learned.
What do you see?
Ebbinghaus discovered that without any reinforcement or connections to prior knowledge, information is quickly forgotten—roughly 56 percent in one hour, 66 percent after a day, and 75 percent after six days.
How do you combat the forgetting of your students? Well, the video suggests 5 different strategies to utilize in your work.
The take away message is that students begin to forget what they learn almost as soon as their learn it. Without reinforcement, student will forget between 70% and 80% of what they learned within 6 days. This is why it is important to spiral content back into different lessons and learning activities throughout the year.
Use any of the 5 tips above to help with how to spiral content back into your lessons or feel free to contact me, your instructional coaches, or your department heads for any other ideas.
Think. Achieve. Succeed.

AMCMS SPED Tip of the Week
Point Sheets:
Please make sure that if there’s a student in your class who has a point sheet (digital or on paper) that you are filling the sheet out EVERY DAY!. With consistently completed point sheets, the contact teacher is better aware of the student’s full day and is able to track trends - are we having issues in the morning/afternoon? Do difficulties occur right after the weekend? Is the issue with a subject area? Do the issues occur in class with a specific peer? - and develop solutions and instruction.
Here are just a few of the reasons why it is so important to get the sheets filled out every day:
-Reinforces appropriate behaviors - students earn rewards for good reports
-Allow conversations for and reteaching about unwanted behaviors
-Shows whether extra instruction is effective
-Drives decisions made about interventions being implemented
-If not completed daily, we are out of compliance on IEPs
Here are a few ways to make the daily task a little easier:
-Drag the link to your desktop so you always have it handy.
-Set a calendar reminder to go off at the end of class.
-Put a sticky note on your monitor.
Proximity:
Proximity can be a powerful tool both for behavior management and for instructional purposes.
Check out this informative video about zones of engagement for proximity!
Technology Tip of the Week
Have you heard of Google Keep?
Capture what’s on your mind. Add notes, lists, photos, and audio to Keep.
Keep syncs up to all of your devices and you can even set reminders and based on time or even based on your location.
The videos below show how to use Google Keep and how Google Keep can streamline your life at school.
