Scholarships
Are there different types of scholarships?
Scholarships are usually offered based on Financial Need (need-based scholarships) or Merit (merit-based scholarships). A need-based scholarship is for students with demonstrated financial need and typically also requires that you also complete a FAFSA because that is what determines student's "financial need". These scholarships may also ask you to submit an essay to talk about your financial need which is where you can discuss why you need money for school and what that scholarship could help you pay for (tuition, housing, textbooks, etc). A merit-based scholarship is offered based on something that you have done such as good grades, leadership roles, community service, etc.
Whatever type of scholarship you are applying for, make sure to mange your time wisely, prepare all of the information needed for the scholarship, and turn it in before the deadline.
What kind of things do scholarships ask for?
- Essays
- Transcripts
- SAT/ACT Test Scores
- Letters of Recommendation from teachers or counselors
- Citizenship status (some scholarships are only available to US citizens and some are available to anyone)
- What school you go to now
- What college/university/vocational school you want to go to in the future
What should scholarship applications NOT ask me for?
- Social Security Number
- Bank Information such as account numbers and routing numbers
- Money/Fees
- Credit Card Numbers
If any scholarship has asked you for this information, do not continue the application.
If you have questions about whether or not a scholarship is legitimate, you can forward it to Ms. V and she will investigate for you.
