School District of New Richmond - November 24, 2023
Letter From The Superintendent
Friday, November 24, 2023
Dear New Richmond Students and Families,
On behalf of the School District of New Richmond, we would like to extend warm wishes to each and every one of you over the extended weekend. This is a wonderful time to pause and reflect on the blessings in our lives and spend quality time with our loved ones.
We would like to remind everyone that there will be no school for students on Monday, November 27, due to a Professional Learning Day. As we transition back to our school routine on Tuesday, November 28, we would like to remind everyone of some important points to ensure a smooth week:
- Attendance: Students and parents, please remember the importance of being on time and in school each and every school day. As you may know, there is a strong correlation between attendance and student achievement. We need all of our students in attendance as they play a valuable role in the learning and collaboration in our classrooms. Please schedule appointments outside of school hours if at all possible.
- Mental Health: Please remember that our school counselors are here to support you. If you or someone you know needs assistance, do not hesitate to reach out. We also encourage you to explore the opportunities that Care Solace provides to you.
- Gratitude and Giving: Being thankful does not have to end when the break does. We encourage you to continue engaging in acts of kindness throughout the whole year!
Respectfully,
Dr. Troy Miller
Superintendent

NRMS Veterans Day
On Friday, November 10, 2023, the New Richmond Middle School held its annual Veterans Day Ceremony. They have been hosting this event for close to 25 years, and it seems to be getting bigger and better each year. The entire school body attends and takes part in the ceremony. Each grade level is invited to wear a patriotic color to celebrate the event.
The event began with a ceremony in the gymnasium that included performances by our 8th Grade Band, Choir, and Orchestra. The 8th Grade class works very hard to put this all together. After a welcome speech by Principal Hatch, three 8th Grade students took to the podium to read their winning essays on the theme "How do Veterans Inspire Me?" to the crowd of over 300 Veterans and visitors. This year's winners were: Ethan Oldberg, Abbie Hill, and Adele Ament.
This year, our Keynote Speaker was Retired 1st Sergeant, Bobbi Jo Bryant. Sergeant Bryant was in the Army for 20 years and has an extensive list of assignments and medals during her tenure. Sergeant Bryant was also part of two tours during her service. Sergeant Bryant is the first female Veteran to speak at our event and she gave a very inspiring speech.
The American Legion Post 80 and the VFW Post 10818 highlighted the event by posting the colors and folding the flag. They were led into the gymnasium by bagpiper and New Richmond Teacher, Kieran DuHoux. The event finished with the playing of TAPS performed by Mr. Mealey and our 8th Grade trumpeters.
After the ceremony, all guests were invited to look at the Veterans Wall of Honor and visit the Veterans Museum in the Middle School Media Center after enjoying some coffee and cookies provided by our School Nutrition Staff. Each 8th Grade student interviewed and built an honorarium for their Veteran. This year, we had over 240 projects that adorned the Media Center.
The 8th Grade History classes were then visited by two active Veterans; SGT First Class David Daley and SGT Emily Martis. Each Veteran spoke to the students about their service and travels that they have experienced during their enlistment and answered questions from the students.
The 8th Grade History Department would like to thank everyone who helped out and made this event possible. It is something that the students love to put on and gives them a real look into the service of our United States Veterans and its importance.

NRHS Student Council Visits CESA 11
Some of our NRHS Student Council members attended a Leadership Day at CESA 11.
They listened to the keynote speaker Sam Demma, participated in a presentation skills workshop, and listened to students from other schools in the area share about a project they implemented. They also had time to set personal goals and worked as a team to begin an action plan to bring back to the NRHS Student Council. This action plan focused on making "small, consistent actions" to better our school and community. This was a great opportunity for our students to fearlessly pursue ways to enhance our NRHS Student Council!

NRHS Science Department Field Trip to UWRF
Our Chemistry Class traveled to the University of Wisconsin-River Falls on a field trip! Through a partnership with UW-River Falls, students enrolled in Dual Academic Credit Program (DACP) courses are eligible to earn college credit. One particular course in this program affords students the opportunity to earn 5 credits of college-level chemistry.
Almost 50 NRHS students earning these credits visited UWRF on Friday, November 10, through the program. DACP offers high-quality early college experiences for high school students through courses taught at high school by qualified teachers while under the mentorship of a UWRF faculty. Dr. Terry Neumann from NRHS under the mentorship of Dr. Jamie Schneider in the UWRF Chemistry & Biotechnology department has been teaching this course for the past three years. These DACP students went to UWRF to experience taking a lab in a college setting so they could get immersed in campus culture. After the lab, they ate lunch in the University Center and talked to students about college life.
The DACP program at UWRF started in 2019-20 and has grown tremendously to now offer classes at nine different high schools. Over 130 students from NRHS are earning almost 900 credits from UWRF this fall. This makes NRHS the university’s largest high school partner for DACP.
NRMS Family & Consumer Education Creates Drawstring Backpacks!
Currently, students in 6th grade FCE are working on constructing their first sewing project: a drawstring backpack! Students began this project by using a sewing pattern to cut out their project pieces, then used the iron to fold and pin the outer edges of their project pieces. They also created a casing for the drawstring to go through before sewing the two pieces together and stringing the drawstrings to finish their project! We have very talented Tigers in our class!

Paperjack 3rd Grade Field Trip to Science Museum
The third grade classes at Paperjack Elementary enjoyed a fun field trip to the Science Museum. They made boats to hold coins, learned about the human body, raced against a t-rex, saw a real mummy and even took a step back in time to visit some dinosaurs! Overall, it was the most fun Friday of the year. We would rate this experience a 10/10!
