Who Should Attend?
Classroom Teachers, Guidance Counselors, School and Clinical Psychologists, Administrators, Parents, and Clinicians including Speech/Language Pathologists.
This workshop is appropriate for parents, professionals, and paraprofessionals who have working knowledge of Autism Spectrum Disorders and common strategies for teaching social cognition and communication. However it is not appropriate for adolescents themselves.
About the Presentation:
Like their age-mates, adolescents with autism spectrum disorders often yearn for best friends and girl/boyfriends. Many also experience sexual feelings as their brains and bodies mature. Yet these adolescents often lack the social knowledge and skills that are necessary for mature and safe relationships. Moreover, they seldom have the opportunity to share their concerns and questions with friends.
This workshop will tackle questions such as:
- How can we help the adolescent make the leap from acquaintanceship to “best friends forever”?
- What about romance?
- What do we need to teach about sexuality?
- How can we ensure that the adolescent is safe in social situations?
- What should we do when the adolescent’s behavior is interpreted as bullying, stalking, harassment, or worse?
This workshop is appropriate for parents, professionals, and paraprofessionals who have a working knowledge of autism spectrum disorders and common strategies for teaching social cognition and communication. It is not appropriate for adolescents themselves.
As a result of attending, participants will:
- Identify at least 3 tools for teaching "true conversation" to adolescents with AS.
- Compare and contrast the progression from acquaintance to close friend in typical adolescents versus those with AS.
- Identify and explain a common-sense approach to sexuality in adolescents with AS.
- Identify real and cyber-threats to safety for adolescents with AS.
- Explain an approach to bullying at the school, family, and individual levels.

About the Presenter:
Teresa Bolick, Ph.D., is a licensed psychologist and board certified behavior analyst, who consults with children, adolescents, families and schools throughout New Hampshire and Massachusetts.
She is the author of Asperger Syndrome and Young Children: Building Skills for the Real World and Asperger Syndrome and Adolescence: Helping Preteens and Teens Get Ready for the Real World.
She presents frequently at conferences for family members, professionals and paraprofessionals.

All received registrations are subject to Cancellation/Refund policy. Cost of registration fee is still liable whether payment is paid or unpaid, if no notice of cancellation is received at least 7 days prior to the event.
If minimum requirement enrollment is not met prior to the early registration deadline, the event may be postponed or canceled.
