Eye of the Dragon
John Dewey Academy of Learning * October 16-20, 2017
THE POWER OF STUDENT DESIGNED ASSESSMENTS (END PRODUCTS)
Many students have recently, or will soon, experience their first assessment of the school year. Assessments at John Dewey are quite unique because they are, among other things, entirely student designed and student led. This means that as students work through the process of completing a project, they have the privilege of deciding upon which end products to create and how to use them to demonstrate their learning in a way that is meaningful to themselves and to others.
For those who are new to JDAL, this can be quite overwhelming. It might be very different from what they are used to. It definitely takes time for students to feel more comfortable with the ownership student designed assessments require of them, but as students gain more experience and more confidence, we witness their end products becoming more and more impactful.
Our assessments are also unique because they are a process, rather than a single event. It is not something that happens at the end of a project; it is something that begins with the project and continues during weekly one-on-one's with advisors, pre-assessment meetings, and presentations to the advisory before the assessment meeting where credit is awarded. Students and their advisors should be in contact throughout the duration of the project, so students can receive frequent feedback to help prepare them for a successful assessment meeting.
We look forward to seeing the passion and creativity our students exhibit during their projects and assessment meeting, and can't wait to share it with you during our first Event Night on November 30th.
Thank you for being a dragon! We appreciate you and we believe in you.
With gratitude,
Jen + the JDAL Staff
