Twin Peaks Middle School
Weekly RAM Newsletter
A Brief Note from Dr. Burke
Dear Ram families,
There is quite a bit to report on this week. On behalf of our entire Twin Peaks team, I would like to begin with a heartfelt offer of condolences to those of you who have been impacted by the senseless acts of violence that took place at the Chabad of Poway yesterday. Words cannot express the profound sense of sadness we feel knowing this took place in our community, a short distance away from our school. We will be meeting as a staff early tomorrow morning to discuss supports available to our students and staff. We are encouraging all students and staff to wear blue tomorrow to honor the victims and show support for those affected. We would also like to invite you to join us for a community vigil at Poway High tomorrow night at 6:30, as we come together in solidarity and stand against hate. At times like this it is more important than ever to remember we are Poway strong and we will not tolerate violence in our beautiful community. If you can't attend this event, we hope you will join us on May 19th at Liberty Station for the Walk Against Hate (details below). We hope to see you there.
Yesterday, I shared with you some resources for discussing this tragedy and acts of hate and bias with your children. Here are a few more you may want to consider:
Empowering Young People in the Aftermath of Hate (for parents/families and educators – also in Spanish)
5 Tips for Talking with Children about Hate Incidents (shortened version of Empowering Young People)

Now for other announcements...

The PTSA is also sponsoring a fundraiser. Join us at El Ranchito on Wednesday 5/1, anytime between 6am until 9pm, for some delicious Mexican grub. Eat yummy food and raise money for TPMS PTSA at the same time! El Ranchito is located on Poway Rd.
Best Buddies will be meeting this Wednesday 5/1 during second lunch. If your student has expressed interest in joining our new club, please help them sign up on www.bestbuddiesonline.org. For more detailed information click here.
I'll close with a message for 6th grade parents...Mark your calendars and save the dates for our annual 6th Grade Olympics hosted by our PE department. On Thursday May 23rd and Friday May 24th all sixth graders will be out on the Twin Peaks upper field competing in Olympic style field events. Don't miss the chance to cheer on your child and their Olympic Team! Help is needed by all 6th grade parents to make this event a success. Donations of water, pop ups and cots will be needed. If you are able to volunteer for either one or both days, please contact Belinda Hoerr at bhoerrgrespta@gmail.com Volunteers will still be able to watch and cheer for their children. Please take the time to look at the Slyreply signup. Thank you in advance for your time.
That's it for now. We look forward to seeing all our students tomorrow, and remember, it's a 3/5/1 day.
Sincerely,
Dr. Burke

ADL Walk Against Hate
This year, Twin Peaks has partnered with the Anti-Defamation League in San Diego to work towards becoming a school where hate is not tolerated. The No Place For Hate committee has held a school-wide signing of the Resolution of Respect and have also facilitated two classrooms activities for their peers: Slurs and Offensive Jokes, and How to Address Them and Addressing Culture and Identity.
In San Diego, the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) are celebrating their 2nd annual Walk Against Hate which brings the entire community together to promote diversity. Thousands of students, parents, business leaders and community members will walk with one another to highlight the values of respect and inclusion. We would love to show our RAM P.R.I.D.E. by joining other San Diego schools and the ADL on their Walk Against Hate.
