Friday Focus
Week of October 31 - November 4
Thank you PTA
Both the students -- and especially the staff --- had a GREAT week!
Construction Notice
We are aware of the concerns over the construction around MWE and Spring Forest MS, and the opening between the playground and Memorial. MWE staff have been reminded to monitor the students closely and we are working with SBISD Operations to determine what else can be done.
In the interim, we will put cones out as a marker/visual reminder for staff and students.
Here Comes the Holiday Season: Candy and Treats Abound!
Our children are being bombarded with candy and treats from every direction - Halloween candy, Thanksgiving pies, Christmas stockings, Valentine’s candy, and Easter baskets! How do we win the candy wars and teach our children the importance of respecting their bodies by eating healthy foods and limiting sugary treats and drinks?
The following suggestions can assist you in increasing the health and well-being of your children.
As always, be a good role model.
- Eat reasonable amounts of sweets. Talk to your children about how you make conscious, healthy eating choices.
See treats as a wonderful opportunity to set limits with your children.
- Set limits before you go to the store, before going to a birthday party, and before you bring candy in your home. “We will be buying one treat today in the store,” sets limits. So does, “We are shopping for food today. No treats this trip.”
- Setting limits does not mean you always have to say “No.” Sometimes saying “Yes” with a qualifier, helps avoid power struggles. “Yes. You may have a piece of candy right after dinner.”
Do not use candy or desserts as a reward.
- When you use candy or food to motivate your children to perform a particular task or behave in a certain way, you are positioning it as a tool of manipulation. This distorts the role treats have in a young person’s life and teaches children that the reward (in this case treats) is more important than the task performed. It also teaches children they only have to behave if there is a reward.
We want our children to develop an inner authority to behave because it is the respectful way to act, not because they will receive a reward.
