October Students of the Month
Brandon Quach has excelled academically in the International Baccalaureate program. Having a 4.36 GPA, he has maintained Principal’s Honor Roll status and ranks 4 in his class. He is a National Merit Commended Student. Brandon has participated in Marching Band since his first year in high school. As a Clarinet Section Leader, Woodwind Captain, and Band President, Brandon has been able to help students and provide direction to the band. During Brandon’s senior year and as a part of the IBA Club, he ran the City of Hope Blood Drive, which allowed him to help a meaningful cause and benefit those in need. Brandon had to collaborate, communicate, and create a new system coordinating with the nurses’ schedules to get the most donations. It was challenging since it was the first blood drive since Covid. Outside of school, Brandon is also involved in community activities. He and one of his closest friends started the Little Free Pantry to address the issue of food insecurity. This program encourages the donation of non-expired food, lowering waste while helping disperse food among community members in need. He also started the Music and Movement Program at the La Habra Children’s Museum with his friend. They offer free music lessons to children with the idea of reviving music programs. After high school, Brandon plans to attend a 4-year university and major in Environmental Science, specifically Cellular and Molecular Biology.
Madeleine Tsoi is an outstanding student in the International Baccalaureate course of study, achieving Principal's Honor Roll every semester. She has a 4.4 GPA, which places her first in her class. Madeleine is a National Merit Semifinalist, AP Scholar with Distinction, and won 1st place in the 2020-21 intramural debate tournament. As part of her extracurricular activities, Madeleine has been a member of the Debate Club - Co-president (2020-23), Science Olympiad - Copresident (2022-23), IBA - publicity (2022-23), and the Math Club - Secretary (2020-21). She has also worked as an assistant debate teacher and judge for the RUSD middle school debate team since her Sophomore year. Madeleine organized and publicized the 2022 blood drive, participated in debate and Science Olympiad tournaments, and raised over $700 with a cupcake fundraiser to donate to the Long Beach Miller Children's Hospital. After high school, Madeleine plans to attend college and major in either Biotechnology or Biomedical Science. She wants to be a medical researcher and specialize in genetic engineering so that she can help do scientific research that will help people medically. She would also love to continue teaching debate during the summer.

Debate Club News
In October, our Rowland High School Debate Team had an outstanding performance at the Orange County Debate League's Fall Tournament in Buena Park. Senior Madeleine Tsoi took home the top honor for the tournament as the Top Overall Speaker. Freshman Celina Poon, Sabrina Su, and Jesse Zhou took home hardware for the fourth-place overall team. The tournament capped off a rigorous three months of preparation. The Debate Team has spent countless hours meeting at lunch and via Zoom on the weekends. Debaters are given two pre-assigned topics for each tournament, and two topics are given on the day of the tournament. Students spend time preparing arguments for each side of the debate since they will not know the side they are on until tournament day. On tournament day, debaters participate in four debate rounds against teams from other high schools. Awards are given for both individual and team performance. Students can join the team at any point in the year. Join our team as they prepare for the Winter Tournament in January. Contact Mr. Lohman for more information. Go, Raider Debaters!

🫶 Weekly Wellness - Gratitude
This month’s theme is Gratitude. What or whom are you thankful for? Focusing on the people and things we are grateful for RATHER than focusing on everything that is going wrong can positively change your perspective and mood. Try it. Think of someone or something you are thankful for - did it bring a smile to your face? What would happen if we think of everything we are thankful for - how would that change how you see things or how you feel? Things don’t look so bad. Perspective is everything. Watch this video and thank someone today.
