Well Brickie fans, we are one week away from winter break and just under two weeks away from opening presents! ... as long as we've all been good this year :)
If you've been listening to 93.9 Lite FM, you may have heard some holiday music over the last few weeks. One of my favorite songs is by legendary singer-songwriter Johnny Mathis. It goes something like this ...
On the mat ... sweat is glistenin'
A beautiful sight
We're happy tonight
Walkin' in a winter sports wonderland
Gone away ... are the fall sports
Here to stay ... are some new sports
They swim a new song
And tumble along
Walkin' in a winter sports wonderland
Catchy ... isn't it?
Ok, let's turn the holiday music down for a few ... it's time for BricksCenter!

Wrestling
On Thursday, Hobart made the trek South on I-65 to Lowell to square off against the Red Devils! This one was never in doubt as the Brickies scored take-down after take-down and returned to The Friendly City with a CONVINCING 57-18 VICTORY over Lowell!! In search of an 8th Conference Championship, Hobart earned victories from six super seniors ... Trevor Schammert, Donovan Ruiz, Jeff Fay, Jake Simpson, Ashton Battistella & Alex Pickett ... four fabulous freshmen ... Luke Juris, Andres Castillo, Seth Aubin & Daniel Mata ... 3 jolly juniors ... Gavin Miller, Jonny McGill & Alan Turich ... and a partridge in a pear tree!!
Saturday morning, our boys traveled west on 73rd over to Merrillville for the Tom Cameron Invitational. Our boys were 2019-2020 champions and looking to defend that title! (No overall champion was crowned last winter thanks to COVID). Opponents for Hobart on the day were FW Carroll, Plymouth, NCC foes Highland & Kankakee Valley ... and after going 4-0 against those squads, our boys faced the host Pirates for the championship! In a grueling match-up, the Brickies lost a close one 39-30 against the 3-time defending IHSAA Regional champs.
Other scores from the Tom Cameron:
Hobart 64, FW Carroll 12
Hobart 63, Highland 13
Hobart 52, Plymouth 21
Hobart 65, KV 15
Not too shabby :)
Overall, Hobart is 5-1 on the season and 2-0 in NCC action! The Brickies will be back at TWWWOOOOOOOOOOOO more times this upcoming week - both at home as our boys host Andrean on Wednesday and the annual Super Duals on Saturday! WE ARE HO-BART!!

Basketball
Only TWWWOOOOOOOOO (sorry - got carried away with the wrestling lingo) games on the slate this past week for the Brickie cagers ... 1 apiece for the boys & girls.
Girls
On Friday night, the Lady Brickies hosted Kankakee Valley in NCC action. The Lady Kougars entered the contest on a roll winning 7 of their previous 8 games. Our girls were looking to get back on track after dropping their last two. This was a BATTLE!! Hobart's play was INTENSE ... particularly on D-D-D-DEFENSE and trailed just 7-10 after 1 quarter. KV got a little separation in the 2nd quarter, but early in the 3rd, the Lady Brickies CHARGED BACK with 8 consecutive points to cut the deficit down to 17-22!! Unfortunately, each time our girls made a run to get within striking distance, the Lady Kougars would respond with a short run of their own. Our girls were in it until the buzzer sounded, but lost a tough one 46-33 thanks to KV sinking all their FTs down the stretch. Ultimately the Lady Brickies came up just a bit short, but gave a TREMENDOUS EFFORT for 32 minutes!! Junior sensation Asia Donald scored 19 points and super sophomore Jesse Neace also scored in double-figures in the loss.
The Lady Brickies are currently 4-6 on the season and 0-2 in NCC play. This upcoming week will be HUGE for our girls as they host Illiana Christian on Tuesday and arch rival Andrean Saturday. LET'S GO LADIES ... YOU'VE GOT THIS!!

Boys
Tuesday night over at Portage, the Brickies faced the Indians in their 1st road contest of the season. In 3 home games, Hobart started 2-1. Portage was playing their home opener after splitting 2 games on the road to start their season. Over the 1st 8 minutes, Hobart controlled both ends of the floor and led by an 11-6 score! Portage rallied in the 2nd quarter and took an 18-15 advantage into the halftime break. The Indians started to find their rhythm in the 3rd period, made nearly every shot they took and blew open what had been a close competitive contest. The Portage lead ballooned to 40-18 entering the last quarter. Hobart went ice cold in the 2nd half as the Indians continued to hit from long range and ultimately lost 64-31. After a great start, our boys continued to WORK WORK WORK ... just couldn't get much going the rest of the way. Senior Miki Djankovich recorded team-highs of 9 points and 4 rebounds. Freshman Noah Ehrlich added 8 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals in the loss.
Hobart is now 2-2 on the season and will open up NCC play Friday on the road at arch rival Lowell. GO GET 'EM BOYS!!
