Academic Discussions - April Expectations

Since January, teachers have been building students’ stamina to participate in quality academic discussions.

Students (grades K-5) should have an opportunity to participate in at least two 10-minute academic discussions each week during the month of April.

Here are some reminders:

  • Academic discussions are more than Turn and Talk or Think-Pair-Share.
  • Students should use the question stems and sentence prompts agreed upon by each grade level during the Academic Discussions PD.
  • Since we are working on a math cycle of inquiry, now is a great time to use academic discussions in math through one of the three math signature strategies: Number Talks, Participation Quiz and Three Reads.

Summer Learning Opportunities

  • Reduced funding for OUSD summer programs means that reduced capacity for the four-week, half-day academic intervention program.
  • Bella Vista has 16 slots at the Joaquin Miller summer hub site, which will host 140 students from 11 elementary schools.
  • Priority for enrollment will go first to students in Tier 2 literacy interventions, followed by other students recommended by teachers. Students must be available from June 22 until July 17, and must have transportation to get to Joaquin Miller, which is in the Oakland hills off Highway 13.
  • EBAYC is hosting its Camp Thrive summer camp at Cleveland Elementary School. They can enroll 80 students from Bella Vista.
  • Camp Thrive applications will be available in the office. The cost is $200 for four weeks.

After School Preview for 2015-2016

EBAYC, our longtime partner for after school programming, is adding a college/career readiness component to its program for next year.

The 2015-2016 program will be open to 80 students in grades TK-5. The enrollment policy defines the following targeted student populations for new enrollment:

  • Students who receive Tier 2 interventions
  • Students in grades TK/K
  • Latino students
  • Students at risk of becoming chronically absent

Applications for next year’s after school program will be available in early May.

PTA Updates

We are inching closer to our 2014-2015 fundraising goal of $20,000! There are two more events scheduled:

  • Movie Night – Friday, May 1
  • 3rd Annual Walkathon – Wednesday, May 20

Our Spirit Week begins on Friday, May 15, with College and Career Day and ends on Thursday, May 21.

The PTA is also planning to revive the annual talent show (first week of June) and is partnering with the 5th grade team to host the promotion events.

Staff Fitness Fun!

  • Approximately 17 people from Bella Vista have signed up for an easy 5K walk/jog (most will walk) or a 10K on Saturday, May 30 at Point Pinole Regional Park. A few more have expressed an interest, so JOIN US!
  • Oakland locals will carpool from Bella Vista.
  • Click here for the race info and online registration.
  • Even if you don't want to do the race, come on out and cheer us on or meet us at the finish line!

District Spring Assessment Schedule

The final round of District assessments begin in early May. We will use the results of these formative assessments to issue standards-based marks on students’ Trimester 3 report cards.

We will also use the results to inform and improve teaching and learning for 2015-2016.

  • During the April 22 classified staff meeting, we will review the evaluation form and schedule observations and feedback meetings.
  • For teachers, classroom observations and post-observation conferences will continue through the end of April, with final conferences scheduled during the first week of May.
  • Please see Ms. Phillips if you have any questions.

  • Thank you, Karen Lee, for donating more than 100 books for our final Book Giveaways!
  • All Bella Vista faculty and staff are invited to join OUSD Superintendent Antwan Wilson and senior leaders from Human Resources and Special Education for a meet-and-greet and open discussion on Tuesday, April 28, from 4:00 until 5:00 at Piedmont Avenue Elementary School.
